How to equip animals?

I got the horse and the crocodile, but can't figure out how to use them. I can't equip them even though they're equipment? What do I use them for?

Anybody can equip the cat you buy from the fate shop, but for the rest of the animals I think you need an animal handler trait that I heard only two of your slaves have by default. I'm not sure if you can gain the trait.

animals can only be put in dedicated pet/animal slots. only certain characters have such slots (4 slots vs the normal 3).

possible to add pet slot to characters if you are on the Riel's Gang questline.

you can get a item if you bet enought on dog
or the third army of the babarian can teach you how to equip a horse (5 gold repeatable)
