Champ was enough for me. I mostly just like making mods.
But what defines "harder" in this case just means the AI button-reads a hell lot more in Arcade mode than in VS mode.
Although I noticed that the more I clear the game through all the lower difficulties and all the game modes such as clearing Survival mode on all characters for example; the AI seems to button-read more and more. This is annoying and frustrating, to be honest. Because I like playing all the characters but as the AI button-reads more and more, I simply cannot use slower characters anymore or I can't use specific moves.
For example, I main Lisa but currently a few characters such as Jann Lee always throws me when I attempt an OH. It is clearly AI button-reading me because he throws me 9 times out of 10, even if in on a particular day I decide to play against Jann Lee, and that was the first time I attempt an OH against Jann Lee and he still throws me... Very ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ BS.
I only play on VS mode these days, because I just like playing with the girls (minus a few) and I have them all decked out in various bikinis most of which are my own mods. Also I only have a limited number of stages available in that mode, I don't want them playing in a war zone or an oil rig wearing beach wear.
I usually have it set to level 4, which theoretically matches Hard in Arcade, but I agree that it's easier, or at least easier than the last few stages of Hard Arcade. I leave it set here because I'm testing different girls all the time to see how the outfits look, and I can play some a lot better than others, and some I don't like to play at all.
But If I want a challenge I switch it to 5 but I agree that it's still not as hard as the end parts of Champ Arcade.
And yeah, also think that the AI has impossibly short reaction times against certain moves. OTOH a real opponent who was really good would be able to learn what moves and combos you like and anticipate them. And then you end up in a meta where certain moves are just not viable because of frame advantage and such that I don't care to know more about.
FWIW.
