Reshade kills performance on desktop (but not laptop)
Hi, when I use Reshade on my laptop, the menus are a little slower but it's not that bad, bearable completely. However on my desktop, switching between outfits, between character select and stage select screens, loading the match, and the intros for the characters during a match are all very choppy. The actual fighting on the desktop seems unaffected but the entire rest of the game runs much slower.

I did in fact change the shader and texture paths in the Reshade .ini to those folders within the game folder, hoping that would help but it didn't. Maybe there's something I'm missing, but my solution now is just to not use Reshade on my desktop, which is unfortunate. Help would be appreciated, thank you

Did you make your own preset or are you using someone else's? I'm trying to establish how deeply you understand ReShade.

Consider me someone who knows jack crap in Reshade, lol. I did make my own preset as I tried the Arcade preset on Nexus but it didn't look as good to me as just having "Curves" on as the only enabled setting. Keep in mind that I am also using (or want to use) the resolution mod that lets me play in 1440p, maybe conflicts of d3d9.dll files are to blame? I'm experimenting with it right this moment but previously I had Autolink's d3d9.dll renamed to d3d9_autolink.dll and Reshade's as d3d9_sweetfx.dll, leaving the resolution mod's file just as d3d9.dll. Then I went to the resolution mod's .ini and made those changes (SweetFX=d3d9_sweetfx.dll as well as Autolink=d3d9_autolink.dll, un-semi colon'd them also). Now I am just about to try with the Reshade but just in 1080p. Maybe what I said gives you an idea how to help, thanks for responding
Yeah should've mentioned that I am not using that resolution mod on my laptop, so come to think of it, that's probably the diffference
You can use 1440p or any other arbitrary resolution by editing DOA5LR's config file directly, no need for any mods for that.

It's been a while since I did anything with ReShade but 2 things I can think of that may be relevant if you are making your own setting.
1. When you are creating your own preset, it will not perform as well until you bake it and it compiles shaders or some such and will perform better.
2. If you were having performance issues with a shader, you could try systematically turning each filter off to find out which one is the performance hog.

The only other thing I can think of is that for some reason, some kind of performance optimisation in the menus is actually making the game perform worse with ReShade. Optimisations can often be major jank and changing stuff can break them. Shouldn't if they are done properly, but if the devs were trying to get max performance or skip quality then maybe the just wrote bad code that breaks under unusual circumstances like what you get with ReShade.
Changing the resolution in the config file in Documents doesn't actually work it looks like. I just tried it. Now my Reshade isn't working at all on the desktop, having renamed it's d3d9.dll to d3d9ex.dll and leaving Autolink's as d3d9.dll. Still experimenting
Another option would be to run the game in window mode in 1080p and then use Borderless Gaming or Borderless Everything to make if fullscreen. You may be able to enable AI upscaling and it may well look better than native 1440p. I'm just throwing stuff out there, there is a lot to unpack in what I just said if you want to go into it.
Hey man, I appreciate your trying to help but the solution to my problem was totally different.

To everyone trying to use the resolution mod (trying to play in 1440p or other resolution not supported), the Autolink mod, AND Reshade at the same time, AND are having major performance decreases when all three are enabled, the problem IS INDEED and issue of the d3d9.dll files. So here's how you fix it:

The load order of those three d3d9.dll files should be as follows: 1) Reshade 2) Autolink 3) Resolution mod. Unlike what some people say to rename Reshade's file as d3d9ex.dll, this did not work for me. Keep Reshade's d3d9.dll the same, call Autolink's file d3d9_autolink.dll, and call the resolution mod's file d3d9_res.dll

Then, in the Reshade.ini text file, under [General] (create the [General] section if you don't have one), write:

ProxyLibrary=d3d9_autolink.dll

Then, in the DInput8.ini file (which is Autolink's .ini), right at the very top make a new line that says:

ProxyLib = d3d9_res.dll

Most of Autolink's .ini is in Chinese but as far as I can tell there's no sections, most of it is just negated by the semi colons, so just write that second aforementioned line in a new line at the very top and it will work.

And the mod_resolution.ini file, you do not have to change at all besides whatever resolution you want to use. That's it. Performance is far better, playing in 1440p, with Reshade and Autolink both working. I am proud to have figured this out.
Well with that information maybe I'll give reshade a go myself. DOA looks pretty good on my 4k TV and the visual mods and reshade presets I tried did not make the game better but maybe I can come up with my own preset. I just hope other people find your post when they need it. Maybe you should consider putting that into a guide.
I suggest just "Curves". POSSIBLY try DPX or Levels as well alongside Curves if you like it, but for me the only setting that actually looked altogether better (instead of just different or slightly worse) was Curves. IMO
Sure, thanks. Makes sense. I do a lot of image editing, I know about curves and levels :)
I'll recommend Gamarye Fast Effects for ReShade (Github link: https://github.com/rj200/Glamarye_Fast_Effects_for_ReShade ). It's never cost me a frame and it does a really great, sloppy version of RT and ambient occlusion. It takes a bit of fiddling with the settings to make everything look right, but once it does it's a big improvement.

I'll look into that, thanks. I'd like to update my recommendation (effects settings I am currently using): "Curves", "Bumpmapping", and "Colourfulness".

Colourfulness increases saturation which I personally prefer, curves intensifies the shadows a little more, and bumpmapping seems to bring out the detail in the textures in a way that looks good. Partial recommendation also to "Adaptive Sharpening" which looks good at a distance but in the character select screen up close, it doesn't look as good, makes them a little fuzzy
Bumpmapping, eh? I'll give that a try. Since it's a texture effect it probably won't mess with my framerate, it'll just use a tiny amount of VRAM. Curves definitely helps; I use it as a saturation slider most of the time.

Edit: Damn! Bumpmapping is awesome! Between that and Fast Effects it's like adding an entire hardware generation of graphical fidelity.

Hey, when you say Fasts Effects, I know you're referring to that github page, but are "Fast Sharp" and "Fast Sharpen" included in those? Cause I turned those two on, as they were installed with my installation of Reshade, alongside Bumpmapping, Curves, and Adaptive Sharpen, and now it looks almost too high res/high def lol. Strangely detailed especially when I press my toggle effects bind to see the difference modded vs unmodded. I say "almost too" but actually it's quite nice, I'm pretty content with the combination of those 5 aforementioned settings, ty
I don't think you need 3 different versions of sharpening running at the same time. You'll have halo artefacts upon halo artefacts.

And yeah, it is possible to overdo things, but if you like it, nobody cares. But it's a bit like adding spice to food. If you keep adding more and more, it's diminishing returns and after a while you get kinda immune to it and it's not special anymore.
