Edit: Also, traditionally speaking, Koei-Tecmo/Team NINJA don't do "GOTY" releases once all DLC has been released for everyone to buy all content on disc at once. They were at least nice enough to provide some DLC packs on the disc for the release of Ultimate and Last Round, but it wasn't all of the DLC at the time, and it was the packs that sold the least on the marketplace that were given away for free on disc.
Oh, and for the sake of clarity, I purchased each of the Season Passes on the PS4.
Between all the different platforms and DoA5 versions I must have spent $600 on DoA5 over the years. They would have lost quite a bit if there are many other people stopped buying things due to frustration with their poor service.
If I play a game for 50+ hours I don't really mind buying DLC as long as it doesn't split multiplayer or cause gameplay balance issues. However if the game has ongoing expensive DLC I expect the game to be maintained properly and any issues to be worked on.
To be honest, all fighting games do this, from Skull Girls to Street Fighter. Since SFII you had several iterations of every fighting game to keep the players interested and the franchises alive, DLC is new, but it has the same purpose in my opinion.
As fighting games don't sell as much as AAA blockbusters and they don't offer the same amount of playtime for people that gets bored easily of playing the same thing too much time, DLC seems to be the only option for the genre to survive.
For me it works, they keep making content for a game I really enjoy and that gives a reason to keep playing, even if it's only cosmetic content. For some people the DLC is worth their money, for some others it's not... just a matter of preferences in the end, I think.
The DLC in this case don't break the community apart, except for the most recent addition of Naotora; But that DLC has an adequate price.
What I only find sad is the lack of optimization on the PC port which has been widely discussed already.
As for DoA Xtreme 3, it is an Asia only release, these things were to be expected. In any case I wouldn't get worked up about them.
I only have the Pre-order DLC.
For PC, I will happily buy new characters and stages though (if they ever show up).
As I stated, KT never does that. Heck, there's DLC you can't get on DOA Dimensions that was only given out for free shortly after the game released.
Tecmo is a big company, they should have a whole department for monetisation, and they do this, why? The work on those DLC shouldn't be bigger on the game itself (they're just costumes for crying out loud) and yet each of them is more expensive than the game itself?
Mind blown man, mind blown.
