AutoLink has had some updates to add Mai to the list of fighters that can mod costumes as well as... <ahem> pole dancing. Can't say that I've been in a rush to download it.
I'm curious if anyone with just Core Fighters has tried using Autolink?
As he pointed out, the advantage is that you can have a virtually UNLIMITED number of costume mods without having to know the numbering of DLC slots, etc. You can have say 22 costumes all as Details for ONE COSTUME SLOT OF ONE CHARACTER, and now that Character has 22 new costumes without overloading the costume slots (which are limited in comparison) or constant reshuffling and swapping (which Lnk Reshuffle by Immi does and mostly automates for you -- saving you the incoherent headaches if you choose that route instead, but Autolink is so far simpler and more unlimited as of June 2016)
In comparison, if you mess with replacing DLC slots, you have to use older tools, you are limited by the number of DLC slots that exist, you have to cross-reference where you placed what or it overwrites, etc. Maybe that is why WPDoom666 sounded like he was going incoherent because that is a lot to mess with in your mind and on your computer.
Autolink is the easiest to use, but after every update it may need to be updated. It has other nice features, including the ability to add custom resolutions, which in the past I used and it worked for 1360x768, for example.
Another relatively easy to use tool is Lnk Reshuffle by Immi. Again, you have to update to the lastest version which comes out usually a few days after a patch, or it may be broken for a bit.
As for the incompatibility with online use, in the past, your opponent will not see your modifications, so it is only client side. Therefore, modifications like costumes and even new meshes, should not interfere with online use, as they have no impact on any of the actual fighting nor any server side information. I don't play online, so you may want to research that further, but reports in that past up to June 2016 indicated that since costume and mesh info are not used in the online game, you should be fine.
As for new characters, this is the best way to add a DLC slot if you must. Purchasing Naotora or Mai Shurani would do the trick and add another character to choose the fight with, which is not a bad thing.
Now, I haven't used the tool for a while, but am going to update and try it soon over the Holidays. All I can say is the value of Autolink is three-fold:
1) You can customize your game more, with custom resolutions not available in the DOA5LR launcher, which is nice if you have a display resolution customized and not in the list.
2) You can use keys, as Zloth mentioned and also in the tutorial he linked to, that will control :
a) Breast Motion (even beyond the available 3 in game)
b) Wetness (again beyond what is in game)
c) Game speed (it can be enjoyable to slow down the game and see what is really going on during fights, I often use this in spectator mode trying to learn AI patterns or combos).
3) Once you learn the syntax for adding the files for mods, you can add an unlimited number of costumes, hairstyles, glasses, masks, hair colors -- so that one character can even look almost totally like another.
a) A good example of this is a mod that makes the transparent character, forget her name now, lose the glow and show costumes underneath. There were already in June hundreds of high quality mods, that looked as just as good as the originals in quality. And no, I'm not talking about stupid nude mods, I'm talking about actual cool looking costumes, or having boots instead of heeled shoes or no shoes at all, etc.
So, provided it works as well as it did before, it's a good way to break into using mod. As Zloth mentioned, the formats of the files used in mod distributions has changed over time. Sometimes you'll have one already perfectly Autolink ready not even needing renaming of the files. Other times you just need to remove hyphens or whatever and put them in the write area for Autolink to use. The oldest ones are actually strangely named with numbers because those actually must go into older tools first, such as a mesh translator (in effect) or to be called as a texture and then added to the mesh as one package, that sort of stuff. I don't intend to fool with all that, but I get the idea from Elder Scrolls Skyrim and Oblivion modding, to which it is similar in concept.
I also have not tried the new Paradise Movie functionality, but the idea is that if you already own that DLC, you can now see the modded costumes and so on in the movies, which would no doubt be a nice addition if you care for that.
It works with the Steam Version. I don't know if it works with the Free Core Version, I would presume that it would, but that's more guess than anything else. I got the original Steam Retail Version on sale for $19.99 and I've been very happy with it especially since I know the longevity of the game is increased by having resolution customization, game speed control, and ability to add costumes as mods if the company ever decides to not add more of its own.
That's a big bonus and it makes the PC versions especially attractive when on sale.
(EDIT IN: Just checked that the resolution, wetness, slow game speed, etc., settings of Autolink still work with newest version 11-5-2016)
It isn't just the costumes, too, it can be the actual models. Huchi in particular will sometimes not just give a character some anima character's costume but also the face.
You also get stuck with the entire spectrum of copyright issues, unfortunately. Deciding just how different something has to be in order to be "new" has always been difficult. Taking an existing outfit and just removing some little part of it obviously won't do it. What if you also change the color? What if you modify the size a bit and move it to another character? What if you actually mix two costumes together? What if most of the costume is your own creation but the shoes aren't? What if it's another game's outfit like Soul Calibur or Final Fantasy? What if it's a costume from some past DOA game that isn't available now? What if the publisher later makes a deal with Square and publishes a bunch of Final Fantasy outfits or releases old outfits? It goes on and on and on!
How often are these random crashes happening? I get a crash every now and again... like once every hour or so. (I never play online so it really doesn't matter that much to me.)
