COOP questions or problems with difficulty? Look here.
Hi there! I've been seeing a lot of discussions made about the COOP with Remote Play and difficulty with game-play so I decided to make this for anyone who has any questions about the two subjects.
COOP works through Steam Remote Play.
What is Remote Play and how does it work? If you or your Steam friend owns a copy of a game with the Remote Play option, you can play together via internet connection just like they were sitting on the couch next to you like the good ol days.
ONLY ONE PERSON NEEDS A COPY OF THE GAME!
Many games that we wished were online coop can now be played together using Remote Play like Enter the Gungeon or Cuphead. For you to play with a friend using Remote Play, one friend must start the game as per usual and go into the main hub where the Gungeoneers are found. After you get to the hub pick your character player one and then use the Steam overlay key (by default it is Shift+Tab) go to the friends list and choose the drop-down menu next to your friends name and invite them to a remote play session. What this does is basically create a live-stream that player one streams to player two. Player one now as their selected Gungeoneer walk over to the cultist and select them, this will prompt you to go into co-op and player two will now control the cultist Gungeoneer. Note that player two can only play as the cultist but player one can still switch to another character if desired.
REMOTE PLAY REQUIRES A DECENT INTERNET CONNECTION SPEED OF ROUGHLY 2.5 MEGABYTES PER SECOND OR YOU WILL EXPERIENCE LAG!

Difficulty
First off, there are no adjustable game settings for difficulty.
This is not an easy game and many people will tell you this. This game has a throwback to the SNES era level of difficulty. If you haven't completed or played an SNES game then this will definitely be a major challenge. I personally have beat the 4 main pasts and the robots past and can tell you what a hellride that was but did I enjoy that hellride? Not at first no I did not. The whole point of this game is that with every run you learn something new about your enemies and how they work, what their patterns are. With practice comes results. The very first time I made it to the Dragun I died when he was at the last part of his health oh what a slap to the face that was to go so far and have it all be for nothing. Yet there's something about this formula (much like SNES games) where it's all about the challenge and rising above, kicking the crap out of that boss that got you, mastering it, thinking how could I have actually died to that boss on the first level? Sure it's a very very difficult game and I'm not going to argue with you on that, this game has made me feel the same anger as when I played Castlevania IV or Cuphead. They're tough but doable and that's the whole point. If you find yourself struggling with the difficulty just stay determined! I never thought I would beat this game but I feel proud that I actually stuck with it. Don't give up!

Did you play BoI or ARnF ? How does the frustration compare to both of them?

PS2: You might wanna make a guide for EtG coop newcomers, where 2 noobs can turn this mode into fun learning and not living hellish purgatory lol.

For some reason i feel BoI is relativelly easy, since it seems quite easy to cheese it with endless life / coins. And getting a lucky run is really not that hard for intermediate players.

But so far i only played 20H EtG and never killed dragun. I might get better, but i feel there are no relaxing "cheese" tactics. Don't get me wrong i like challenge, but i also like relaxing weekends with a good drink and using cheese tactics just for the lolz. Is legit i think on solo games :3

On coop: So far i feel coop mode is more a crutch than helping anybody. Especially with 2 noobs starting out and even struggling getting to floor 4. So far i feel i got higher chances to kill dragun first time, if i learn the game solo, than to let join a casually also noob (like me) friend. Sad but seems true?

ARnF = A robot named fight

PS: I beat both ARnF & BoI. With BoI i even gotten to 99% just missing 4 achievements. ARnF seems to have just the right difficulty to not frustrate and let you rage quit. But reaching meat core first time was surely hard and a thrill ride ^_^
BoI feels also very relaxing, since with every run you unlock new loot / bosses. So even if you are not able to reach devil, moms heart or blue baby straight away, you still progress. Already beeing able to farm mom reliably feels great. That feeling is missing in EtG :c

TL;DR
Do you really recommend coop mode for newcomers to learn the game & beat dragun first time?
Personally i would say no coop mode = hardcore nightmare mode. Lol and solo mode is somehow mediocre medium / hard difficulty. Reason: Player #2 dies too often and everytime you find the weapon chest, instead of great black / red chest chance you have to revive your stupid alchemist buddy lol. = bleeding out on bad weapons = impossible to DPS rush kill bosses from floor #4++

In short
That coop is a straight up lie.
The correct advertisement would be: "well you have to unlock it first. And if you don't look it up you'll probably spend several hours by missing it."
TheDameWithTheGame Jul 27, 2020 @ 11:56am
Personally I think that one should only play coop in this game if you both are good at the game. I'd recommend to beat at least one run through before playing with friends (Recommended that you play with a friend who knows what they are doing in the Gungeon)
Have not played ARnF but will look into it now not sure about Bol (could you clarify what game that is please?)
There isn't really a way to cheese the gungeon, it really calls back to the classic SNES era bullcrap that made so many gamers in the 90's rage. I personally love challenging games, I've beat Super Ghouls n Ghosts and let me tell you that is no cake walk, as when you beat the game, the main princess sends you back to the beginning (yeah that's right all the way back and don't come back without my bracelet or you're going back again). When I first played gungeon I died way too many times but then again when I started Super Ghouls n Ghosts or even Dark Souls I couldn't beat the first level like a scrub
Press on with the challenge and the feeling of mastering a level or the game is such a wonderful feeling and worth the hours invested in my opinion. The sheer amount of variety and replayability in this game has astonished me
Also when going through the Gungeon if you haven't beat the Dragun yet you'll need to create the "Bullet That Kills The Past" otherwise you won't be able to even get a glimpse of the characters past. (I killed that Dragun without the bullet a couple times now and nearly gave up completely at that point it was so depressing lol)
So basically unless you're best friends that can cooperate, coop is either a living hell that is not worth the ride or an amusing time with your friend slaughtering your way through the Gungeon.
I appreciate the comments and might consider writing a guide in more detail, this was more so because I kept seeing questions about COOP
COOP mode doesn't need to be unlocked if I remember correctly the Cultist has always been standing there in the hub
Oh man I just realised I'm stupid and that BoI is Binding of Isaac the I threw me off I thought it was an L lmao I have played that a long time ago way before gungeon and that I find is a lot easier than Gungeon (fairly sure I had somewhere around a 80% complete save on BoI)

BoI is basically the ancient stoneage grandfather of rogue-lites on steam.
Binding of isaac. Singleplayer ONLY!
The classic game can be found here:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/113200/The_Binding_of_Isaac/

BoI is also easy to cheese, when you know how to grind endless hearts / coins / damage xD
But needs some knowledge of map seeds / grinding, so newcomers can't instantly cheese this game!

There is also an updated more Snesish kind of game, but i really don't like their art direction there and people say that game is actually easier than the classic one lol ...

ARnF also has a coop mode, somewhat limited to player #2 as flying bot drone
But ARnF is really fun also solo, and the level variety seems also quite big, i wasn't able yet to kill the 2 new boss variants lol
https://store.steampowered.com/app/603530/A_Robot_Named_Fight/

It is also possible to cheese ARnF with according knowledge and shrine gambling. And this is again a nice option, when you like grinding / indepth RNG options :3

PS: I actually bought EtG and ARnF both bundled, when steam first released remote play together feature. Somehow i beat or finished ARnF much faster. And that feels more satifying. But i didn't give up on beating EtG yet lol ...
Still no dragun kill ;_;

PS2: I kinda miss a cheese method for EtG. I heared there is like a luck stat and other stuff, but it seems exploiting the shop / altars is not a fail safe option sadly.
It surely is nice to have a cheese option in rogue-lite games. I mean kudos to people, who can beat EtG first run. But i think more options i.e.: grinding, rush, cheesing a game is really nice.

So like pro noscope harcore players can rush it and us normal or layed back people can at least try to beat the game with yummy cheese. I bet rat king will be happy!
:meaty:

PS3: Writing guides for BoI & ARnF is really fun, since there alot of map seed combos or shrine offerings to discover. Shrines are really great way of replayability. So far EtG feels abit "static" shop & level design wise ...

Played both The Binding of Isaac and the sequel a lot (afterbirth? Prebirth? Idk I have like 2 or 3 Isaac games in my library lol) there are many ways to cheese things in that game but not Gungeon. Don't give up! Believe that you can defeat the Dragun! I believe! I am ashamed to admit how many times I've died to the level one bosses (and still do after completing the game)
A Robot Named Fight really reminds me of the classic Contra and Metroid days lol I never was too into those games but if it goes on sale I might pick it up looks interesting. :etgconvict:
TheDameWithTheGame Jul 27, 2020 @ 12:31pm
Something I find really helps with Gungeon is unlocking the people of the main hub the breach. When you keep finding people in the Gungeon they'll go back to the breach and usually have something to say. One of the shops that is boarded up from the beginning of the game (the one boarded door to the left of the entrance to the gungeon) (Not the one with the pizza looking sign thats the elevators)
Anyway there are 4 or 5 characters that offer different and unique game modes. I'm currently stuck playing the Rainbow Run because it's so much fun. You start with only getting a rainbow chest at the beggining of the game which you can only pick one item out of and all other chests on the level are rendered practically useless. Every floor or "Chamber" gives you another rainbow chest
Then there's a game mode to speed everything up as if EtG wasn't hard enough right?
TheDameWithTheGame Jul 27, 2020 @ 12:35pm
Also the "luck stat" if I remember correctly is more of a "cool" stat
the more cursed items you pick up will cause enemies to become "jammed" and therefore usually red and tougher. This effect can take hold of any enemy except bosses (I think and hope lol as I have never seen a jammed boss)
The cool stat I really don't understand what counters it I just now that your "cool" goes down when picking up cursed items
Theres also so many secrets to uncover as well in this if you don't already know about them the Robot, The Bullet, The Gunslinger just to name a few and the secret levels and secret rooms scattered so brilliantly
Retrolicious Jul 27, 2020 @ 1:01pm
For metroidvania fans 10 bucks for ARnF is a steal. But yeah if your not a particular fan maybe they do another 50% sale and i think with 5 bucks you can't go wrong with any game?
I'm actually suprised BoI standard price is 5 bucks xD Man i sunk like 300H into BoI.
Those retro days lol ...

Yeah i still try to beat EtG, but the level design seems abit strict idk. I really liked with BoI, if you get lucky you could really rush through levels and just focus on boss hunting. Also 1 "normal" run EtG only has 5 bosses, while unlocked BoI run i believe has at least like 8+ bosses lol.

We will see, i just hope i don't meet ammoconda too many times, i feel that boss is cheating unfair :c

I think i once tried to beat a past or something and died fast to a bullet hell, but idk maybe it was just a miniboss for the marine? Too long ago oO

I think my next project is beating oubliette, it's not harder than floor #3 right? Hope i can beat it with the current training i have. I reach sometimes floor #5 and die dumb to traps or hammer.
And more reliably i can reach floor #4 i think.
The amount of times I have died to that stupid hammer lmao
Ammoconda can be a bit cheap but if you focus on the spheres that he eats he won't get his boost, also aiming for the broken parts of the Ammoconda do more damage. I find the toughest level 2 boss is The Gorgun man she has killed me far too many times. Beholster I find is the easiest boss in general, I have yet to actually beat the secret levels but it's what I've been trying to do lately. First time I saw that huge bullet kin I was laughing too hard and died because of it lol
Floor three can be a pain when you go against any of the three main bosses of that level (every level or chamber has 3 bosses excluding Dragun)
Chamber 1 - Bullet King, Gatling Gull, Trigger Twins
Chamber 2 - Ammoconda, Beholster, Gorgun
Chamber 3 - Canonbalrog (My personal pain of this level I hate this boss), Mine Flayer, Treadnaught
Chamber 4 - High Priest (Cheap moveset can easily kill off players), Kill Pillars (Reminds me so much of one boss fight from Zelda Link To the Past, they are tough but fair when you learn the pattern), Wallmonger (Absolute piece of... I HATE THE WALLMONGER)
Chamber 5 - The High Dragun
Then there's the secret bosses too,
Blockner, Door Lord, Blobulord, Old King, Resourceful Rat, Cam Clarke as Agunim
Oh also the Past bosses lol there's Black Stache from the Prisoner, Dr. Wolf's Monster from the Hunter, HS Absolution from the Pilot, Interdimensional Horror from the Marine, I'm not too sure who is from the Bullet's past as I'm still working on unlocking him, then there's the Last Human from the Robot (a reference to the Terminator)
Then there's always the hidden sixth chamber of Bullet Hell
Many bosses. Not saying Boi is without its variety in bosses but the amount of times I went against The Duke of Flies or Monstro was insane
a very helpful link and where I got most of this info was on the Wiki page
https://enterthegungeon.gamepedia.com/Enter_the_Gungeon_Wiki
Also getting those elevators working is a really helpful way to make the game slightly easier at the cost of losing out on anything you might have earned in the previous chambers you skip

No clue what level boss this is, but i really like the fight vs that giant tank + pillars.
Kinda feels like i play a retro version of metal gear solid. lmao :D

Also i totally agree beholster is awesome and relaxed boss. His rockets are badass.

For some reason i also really like the Medusa fight. She best waifu <3

I still can't remember all those chamber #3 & #4 bosses, i feel most times i just luck them out with awesome guns. I really like that white rifle, which shoots heatseeking bullets. It shoots like a big vortex, which then splits into 5 heatseekers. That gun really helped me to first kill that Wallmonger. I had no clue what a wallmonger boss is and killed it first try only cause of imba DPS weapons lol. In said run i think i had the white rifle + rocket launcher or something.

Can't remember all those weapon names yet, too noob ;_;

I guess i have to wait for more awesome guns & RNG luck to beat chamber #5 :D
Oh and i should figure out how to finally survive that stupid hammer :V

PS: I think i was able to let the #1 chamber elevator work. But i'm stuck i think to repair elevators #2 - #4 lol. I think i need to grind more money to be able to right?

1st shortcut elevator the guy will need 3 blanks, 3 keys and 120 monies then 10 fence things, also a Master round 1 trophy (unlocks Gunboots)
2nd shortcut requires 3 armour, 4 keys and 180 monies, 15 fence thing and the Master round 2 trophy (unlocks R2G2)
3rd shortcut requires 4 junk (earned from destroying chests) 5 keys and 240 monies, 20 fence things and the Master round 3 obviously they all need the Master round trophy (third shortcut you will recieve the Gungine a personal favourite gun in the collection)
4th shortcut requires 6 filled heart containers to show him (it makes him happy dance and doesn't take your hearts you just have to have them) 6 keys and 300 monies, 25 fence and of course the Master round 4 (Unlocks AKEY-47 gun which when fired at chests or locked doors will open them from what I remember. Also unlocks Boss Rush mode)
There is a very rare item when you smash enough chests looking for junk and that is the golden junk which gives you a stupid amount of money when in your inventory
The creep that pops up sometimes around the Gungeon can buy useless guns and items off you too if you drop them in his cage but you probably already knew that if you're trying for the secret levels lol
Once you have the second chamber shortcut unlocked start at the second chamber and hop on in (after the tinkerer is gone you will see the busted television)
Is this ever a challenge good grief.... you need to get the broken television all the way to the 5th chamber without losing it and take it to the blacksmith which is super hard because every time you dodge roll you drop it. Using the item will throw the television so be careful getting it across the gaps! :etgconvict:
I can't remember what unlocks the clone but the clone is a very very overpowered passive item if you've got the time. The clone sends you back to the beginning of the game when you die BUT you still have all your weapons and heart containers you picked up in the previous run (everything gets saved including your money so this is actually how I personally unlocked a couple of the shortcuts)
Synergies are also incredibly important to beating the Gungeon and mastering it (along with mastering dodge roll of course)
Synergies will give that super powered gun that extra oomph when it comes to any enemy. First synergy I got was the Phoenix gun upgrading into an actual Phoenix buddy that flew around with me. Personal favourite wombo combo is the Vulkan Cannon (I think that's how it's spelled it's the minigun lol) combined with the drum clip and a bullet passive that helps with aim. With those three items I cleared the Dragun without getting hit and was I ever proud of that one!
