Is there any way to know what kind of item a chest will have?
I find that a vast majority of the time, I would rather get an item over a gun from a chest.

Obviously, through certain items/gun synergies, there are ways to 'see' inside of a chest and know what item is in it before opening it, but what I want to know is if there is a general way to know if a chest is holding a gun or not without these items/synergies.

Of the two chests that are guaranteed to be on a particular floor, I understand that one will always have a gun and one will always have an item (perhaps not in the case of a Synergy chest or glitched chest). If the first chest I open is an item, then I often do not open the other (even if an extra key since I generally find guns to be less useful).

I was thinking that perhaps the devs left a small clue or some way to know which chest is which, but through my 1000+ hours of playing, I have not been able to find anything.

So, is there any way to know which is which without items or opening one of the two chests?

I share your same plight of always wanting items over guns, I've done a ton of research to find if theres any discrete ways, sadly there are no vanilla ways (that are atleast known) that allow you to tell that a chest is a gun or an item without those few gun synergies

I see. I always thought that there might be some clue. Perhaps a 'gun-holding chest' has less 'health' and can take more shots before being destroyed than an 'item-holding chest,' or the layout of a room determines what kind of chest it leads to. That would be neat, but of course it would also take away the randomness of it all.

Anyway, thank you for the reply.

Besides a synergy with the charming bow and charming rounds and pink guon stone, I don't think there is. if you find the synergy its really good though.
