What do altars do?

I've seen them on almost every floor, the room with the stone coffins and then an altar at the top. I can interact with the altar but it always just says its empty. The hell am I supposed to do there?

Actually this room is quite special since you need to go to a 'secret' level beforehand.
Only then can you try and do something in that stone coffin room.
(I'm trying to not spoil much so yeah)
BTW it should only appear on the 2nd floor

you mean the oibliette? I've been there and beaten it, don't remember if I encountered an altar afterwards but yeah, still not idea what to do

I bet you sacrifice the special armor you get from the oubliette at that altar

so I got the crest to the altar and unlocked the second secret level, beat the boss (which was a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bullet sponge ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥) and...that was it. Was there ANOTHER secret I was supposed to do/find in there or is that the end of this trail of secrets?

Im not sure, I am not good enough to even get to the second secret area yet. Maybe that is the end of that particular chain and there is something else you can do on later floors.
