Best starting character to play?
I have played all characters and cannot decide on which one is optimal. Opinions?

Marine's got great accuracy which will probably come handy for longer runs. Plus starting armor. I do like the hunters crossbow for one shot lower tier enemy kills though. Plus she's got a cute lil doggie.

I like hunter beacause her crossbow is so good early when u dont have a proper good gun and the extra items from her dog is great. However I've been using pilot recently and his lockpick is SO GOOOOODDD AND TASTYYY. The succes rate is mahusive. 4 me its pilot or hunter. Convict is trash and marines accuracy is ok, armor is only usefull early game IMO. Thos is all my opinion. Some people like the convict but she is outclassed by everyone

None of them are optimal. Each has strengths and weaknesses.

Personally I've been doing consistently best with the Convict lately. Her pistol is amazing. I totally sold it short when I first played her because I was just looking at the clip size. Reload on it is super quick, though, and the rate of fire is really good so you can just spam bullets without really thinking about it.

It's really up to your playstyle. Eventually, to unlock everything in the game, you need to craft The Bullet on everyone and kill their past so it's not like you won't be spending plentiful time with them all.

Convict 4 lyfe, though I don't see much difference between the characters, especially not once you find a gun you like better than the starters.

Concvict is a really good starter. For players who play for the first time these kind of games benefits with the shotgun to aim until they are loosen up with there aiming. The molotov is a great active, Dealing with a crowd of Gundeads. The starter infinite gun she start with is really good. The rate of fire and reload speed it got, besides the 5 bullet magazine, makes this a great gun even in later chambers to finish off gundead to conserve ammo on other guns. The damage bonus is handy for beginners as they are likely to get hit during bosses which helps them to beat them faster before they perish.

The Marine is objectively the best character.

He has more ammo in his starting pistol, an amazing passive item that gives you more accuracy and reload speed, a failsafe active item that gives you full ammo if you're ever in trouble and to top it all off he starts with free armour. Easily the best character, but the others do have small benefits.

Marine is the best "noob" hero. The accuracy and ammo makes it really easy to get through the first floor or two. Then I found the hunter to be second best because her crossbow one shots a lot of the easier enemies.

No, he's not. I used to think that, then several hours more playing, I no longer think that.

Rate of fire matters, a lot. Both the hunter and convict blaze through the first floor quicker than the two male characters because their starting weapons shoot way faster and reload way faster. It's also hard to argue against starting with extra guns, even as mundane as the Sawed-off and Crossbow.

The hunter's dog is underrated. A single blank means it just made up for the Marine starting with an extra hit of armor. He'll usually dig up an item per chamber, sometimes more. It's not insignificant, or at least no more so than starting with a pip of armor.

The convict's damage passive is also massively underrated. Even if you're crazy good at this game, the later bosses are especially hard to dodge. If you have any automatic weapon, you will do SO MUCH extra damage. If I wasn't the convict on my most recent run, I would not have got past the Wallmonger because I just cannot figure out his ridiculous bullet patterns so the damage boost helped me kill him before he killed me. The damage boost is actually really extreme and often prevents further hits because you just obliterate whatever damaged you. The downside is it's not particularly good with slower weapons, but then again, the Marine's accuracy passive does nothing on any beam weapon.

The marine is very good! But I just think it's false to say he's "objectively" the best character.

The best character is whomever you do best with. Everyone has upsides and downsides.

I like the marine. Accuracy boost and reload speed is nice, and his sidearm isn't too bad. I do need to try the hunter and see how often the extra items show up, though.

I find it to be the opposite, the marine for short runs, his major benefits being his armour and accuracy, and the hunter for long runs because of her dog that gives items. Overall if you have played enough to get over the bad starting accuracy the pilot is GOD because of his passives and the all powerfull lockpick
