How does the progression work?
I bought this a few days ago and put some hours into it, but I don't quite understand how you really progress forward. I know it's a rogue-like and when I die I basically start over. I see in that book you have that there is many guns, bosses, enemies, and just sheer content.

Yet whenever I die, quit, or go back to the breach I seem to just start over. I feel as though I am missing something, and whenever I pay boss credits to unlock things in that shop I never see those items. I was hoping this was kind of like Rogue Legacy where you make some sort of progression until you eventually beat it.

Progression works by using those boss credits you're picking up to unlock things from the shop so you'll see them in game. That's the only type of progression outside of each run that you're going to get. The sort of progression until you beat the game is that you get better at it.

Guns you buy and unlock are put into the pool of weapons you can find in the Gungeon. You can then occasionally buy them from vendors or find them in chests

Unlock cells for some some npc's that go to the breach or sometimes show up in your run. They are quite useful.

Keep buying 'em. They show up eventually. (I mean, what else are ya gonna spend 'em on? Blessings?)

so that's the only real progression you can take with you into the gungeon? By the time i'm on the second floor I'm at like 1 heart life, I don't get how people can get real far in one sitting if when you quit you start over.

You progress further by learning how to avoid the various different bullet patterns rather than leveling up your character, similar to classic bullet hell games. That combined with a winning run usually taking between 30 to 60 minutes makes it very doable in one sitting. It is just kind of one of the neuances of both of the genres this game is based one.

There's more progression in YOU the player than YOU the character. I would bold those but unsure how to do that so caps work.

You begin to memorize how each boss works, each enemy, each room. While the dungeon is random, what spawns in those rooms are set. Like one hallway like room on floor one. Always one Gundead and one slime enemy. Always.

After that it's just training your skills and reflexes to take advantage of this memory. Some people really enjoy that.
