Isaac has quite a ton of synergies where you just become indestructible, so that could be a more casual option. Although the theme could be a bit much for some.
Crypt of The Necrodancer doesn't really feature any shooting and is more of a rhythm game, but it is a great game nonetheless and one I enjoyed a lot.
I personally felt like Rogue Legacy was "lite version" of roguelikes with the permanent upgrades and such, it's a platformer. Maybe that would be good?
There's a clear end-goal, and the game isn't a "do a run" game, it's more of a "try to beat these bosses over as many lifetimes as it takes, so you can fight the last boss" thing. You can even beat one boss and never have to deal with it again. It's very vaguely a roguelite. It does have random level generation, and pseudo-perma-death.
You don't get any weaker, you just have to go into a new castle, unless you want to lock the level (you get less money if you lock it to the same map, but I think it stays explored, good if you're ready to win the game).
I'd say try Binding of Isaac (yes, the DLC is definitely worth it). Keep in mind that it might take a good few hours before you get good at it, the game is challenging. But once you figure out the game, it's easier than Gungeon.
Isaac is all about tons and tons of passives, most of which blend together. Solid gameplay, but four-directional aiming with movement-shooting inheritance? (if you're moving left, and shoot up, your bullets drift left).
Another option I'd like to recommend is Risk of Rain. Assuming the game works for you.
It's got very different characters to unlock, each with different stats and four different abilities/attacks. Mostly a passive-fest for items (like Isaac).
Very fun game, but the runs are shorter than Isaac or Gungeon, typically. Though you can loop.
The game gets harder the longer you take to end it, encouraging you to clear levels faster, but clearing levels faster means you don't level up as much, and you get less items. Enemies endlessly spawn, and they always drop experience and money, so you can get stronger than the game (especially if you loop, which I think unlocks after you beat the game once).
If you're looking for a medieval theme, there's a game I've been meaning to buy eventually which looked pretty darn cool. I think it's called "Flamebreak"? You might want to check out some youtube videos on it, the art style doesn't do the gameplay justice.
Solo experience is better but maybe not a game I'd do several runs in, myself.
Thanks for the suggestions so far, I'll take a look at them and see if they're what I'm looking for.
I've heard goods things about Neon Chrome, too.
Death State is a bit weird as you don't aim at all--it's a single stick shooter, but you could give it a whirl. Again, much more of bullet hell than Gungeon, so not sure if you'd be interested.
Anyway, there's plenty of choice for bullet hell roguelites these days!
I had a look at Death State, seems pretty cool and more like BoI than Gungeon.
For a top down, procedurally generated, exploration-based roguelike that's not a shooter, there are tons of options. I rather liked One Way Heroics.
I like the sound of top exploration based on melee weapons instead of guns, but I'm not really into turn based action or JRPGs, they tend to have too much number crunching for me.
One Way Heroics isn't big on the number crunching, and feels quite fast-paced for a turn based game. It's actually good at making you feel rushed even though you can technically take as long as you want if you really wanted to.
FTL.
