Similar games?
I love this game, and as much as I wish I was good at it, I'm not. In fact I've only cleared the game once, and that was by accident. There are lots of things about this game that I feel would be great in other games, and whilst sometimes I wish the game was a little bit different, I'd never try to change it because it was meant to be the way it is.

It would be pretty great though to find out about some similar games, hopefully something a bit more casual. I've done some searching in the steam store but I haven't come up with much.

If anyone knows of a similar dungeon crawler that has rogue-like/lite aspects, rewarding gameplay, and perhaps a medieval theme then please leave a suggestion. Multiplayer would also be great.

isaac, nuclear throne, crypt of the necrodancer wowza can i include undertale ... no .... k

I wouldn't really suggest Nuclear Throne myself, didn't get into it. Feels like it's more for those who want daily challenges and speedruns and the like.

Isaac has quite a ton of synergies where you just become indestructible, so that could be a more casual option. Although the theme could be a bit much for some.

Crypt of The Necrodancer doesn't really feature any shooting and is more of a rhythm game, but it is a great game nonetheless and one I enjoyed a lot.

I personally felt like Rogue Legacy was "lite version" of roguelikes with the permanent upgrades and such, it's a platformer. Maybe that would be good?

I'll check it out, thanks.

I second the nomination of Rogue Legacy. It's one of the better rogue-lites out there. Not too difficult but still definitely a learning curve. Very fun game.

Rogue Legacy is closer to a game you beat, rather than a game you play.
There's a clear end-goal, and the game isn't a "do a run" game, it's more of a "try to beat these bosses over as many lifetimes as it takes, so you can fight the last boss" thing. You can even beat one boss and never have to deal with it again. It's very vaguely a roguelite. It does have random level generation, and pseudo-perma-death.
You don't get any weaker, you just have to go into a new castle, unless you want to lock the level (you get less money if you lock it to the same map, but I think it stays explored, good if you're ready to win the game).

I'd say try Binding of Isaac (yes, the DLC is definitely worth it). Keep in mind that it might take a good few hours before you get good at it, the game is challenging. But once you figure out the game, it's easier than Gungeon.
Isaac is all about tons and tons of passives, most of which blend together. Solid gameplay, but four-directional aiming with movement-shooting inheritance? (if you're moving left, and shoot up, your bullets drift left).

Another option I'd like to recommend is Risk of Rain. Assuming the game works for you.
It's got very different characters to unlock, each with different stats and four different abilities/attacks. Mostly a passive-fest for items (like Isaac).
Very fun game, but the runs are shorter than Isaac or Gungeon, typically. Though you can loop.
The game gets harder the longer you take to end it, encouraging you to clear levels faster, but clearing levels faster means you don't level up as much, and you get less items. Enemies endlessly spawn, and they always drop experience and money, so you can get stronger than the game (especially if you loop, which I think unlocks after you beat the game once).

If you're looking for a medieval theme, there's a game I've been meaning to buy eventually which looked pretty darn cool. I think it's called "Flamebreak"? You might want to check out some youtube videos on it, the art style doesn't do the gameplay justice.

I did like Risk of Rain somewhat, although the multiplayer was sadly busted and crashed at the start of the final level every time. Very disappointing.

Solo experience is better but maybe not a game I'd do several runs in, myself. :flowey:

I've played Risk of Rain but it lost it's charm after a little while as it felt like even with the different artifacts, the gameplay wasn't much different between runs, and the multiplayer didn't work very well for me. I'm looking for something more top-down that has a reason to play other than to just get to the end and beat a final boss.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I'll take a look at them and see if they're what I'm looking for.

Starward Rogue is a good game. It's way more of a bullet hell than Gungeon--very much true bullet hell Touhou/Cave style, but it has 5 difficulty settings to choose from.

I've heard goods things about Neon Chrome, too.

Death State is a bit weird as you don't aim at all--it's a single stick shooter, but you could give it a whirl. Again, much more of bullet hell than Gungeon, so not sure if you'd be interested.

Anyway, there's plenty of choice for bullet hell roguelites these days! :steamhappy:

That's good to know, but my search was more aimed at top-down dungeon crawling than bullet hell.

I had a look at Death State, seems pretty cool and more like BoI than Gungeon.

Just wondering, dude, if you've heard of Monsters and Monocles? That might be the game for you. Coming out soon on early access. Just saw Sleepcycles playing it and it looks pretty sweet! :steamhappy:

Though it lacks roguelike elements, I heartily recommend Assault Android Cactus as a fine frenetic, high action, top down twin stick shooter.

For a top down, procedurally generated, exploration-based roguelike that's not a shooter, there are tons of options. I rather liked One Way Heroics.

Monsters and Monocles looks awesome, I'll definitely try it out at some point.

I like the sound of top exploration based on melee weapons instead of guns, but I'm not really into turn based action or JRPGs, they tend to have too much number crunching for me.

One Way Heroics isn't big on the number crunching, and feels quite fast-paced for a turn based game. It's actually good at making you feel rushed even though you can technically take as long as you want if you really wanted to.

That's cool, I'll think about it then. Is there anything else that comes to mind?
