The Pilot Sucks.
His starter weapon is so trashy, I don't even bother trying to go past floor one if I don't get a decent gun to replace it. Even the T-Shirt Cannon has more going for it than the 'Rogue Special'. The lock picks make up for nothing because I always get an insane amount of keys to spawn with him, and on top of that I barely have to spend casings at shops because I don't get hit, or I don't need anything. The only things that the pilot himself has going for him is the extra ammo, and the extra use item slots, but what's the damn point if you don't get a decent gun to replace the 'Rogue Special'? There isn't anything special about it. It's inaccurate and it doesn't make up for it in damage. Junk has more special qualities than this POS. At least junk got me a new elevator to practice against new enemies, and farm caped bullets.

Not even gonna finish the pilot's past. He's a smug idiot. I'm not even bad at the game I beat the other three's past in under 70 hours, with two of them being back to back.

There's not enough salt left in this world to season up the pilot who I have blazed. Ok I'm done.

I know it's worth it, which is why it's so frustrating to get his past done and over with Q_Q.
All I did with the hunter's past is stay as far away as possible and spam the sticky crossbow. It helps get rid of some bullets coming your way too.

I killed the Hunter's past on the run where I forged the Bullet. You've got nothing.

Speaking of which, I just beat the pilot's past an hour ago, and beat my first blessed run to unlock Gunther :P.

Out of all the characters, I fancy the Pilot the best.

Yup, usually you're going up against 1st chamber bosses with the Rogue Special, but I'll gladly pay that price for the perks you get with him. Shop prices being lower is great, I love saving casings. Lockpicks aren't so Trusty at all, but at least you get a chance to open those chests you'd otherwise just have to leave/break, if you don't get lucky with keys. I hate nothing more than missing out on things in chambers, in this game.

But the best thing is the extra active item slot. With EVERY other character, you are often forced to choose between an invincibility item, a damage boost item, a steal item; whatever it is, you can only carry one and leave the other. And as already stated, I hate missing out on things, but I also hate having limited options instead of more options. Getting a Backpack or a Utility Belt with another character doesn't happen very often either. Also, if you get lucky during a run, you can become a walking, dodge-rolling, gunning god with two active items, for example the Potion of Lead Skin and Stuffed Star.

One more thing. Trick with the Rogue Special is when you move and aim, you gotta be actively and very carefully moving the cursor to combat the spread of the gun. Once you get it, you start aiming better with it. Never 100% accurate tho.

I only want to say that for me, his additional active slot almost always does nothing, because I very rarely get active items, and even if I do, they are rarely worth keeping and using. So I also agree that the Pilot sucks, the starting weapong is horendous and I had to do several runs to kill his past because I never got past the Dragun. Ever since those countless tries, I did beat his past, and also said to myself - never playing as the Pilot again.

I like the Pilot a lot myself since I get to save up keys and possibly get free brown chests, not to mention the two item slots and discounts from shops.

The starting gun is crappy yes, but the alternative options aren't really much better. Pilot one of my favorites for sure. :flowey:

I can't agree with you with you saying the alternative options aren't that great. The convict's starting weapon has a hair trigger which is really nice when you have something that increases reload speed like the medal of valor. Not to mention that if you get hit, you deal more damage which can be a life saver in boss fights. The Marine has a decent starter weapon because of how much ammo it has, and since he has the military training manual those bullets aren't put to waste making it generally one of the best starting weapons in terms of accuracy and damage output, not to mention you have a ammo drop which is useful later on if you can't seem to find any decent active items to begin with. The hunter is the only one that isn't that great since the dog isn't as useful, but she does have the crossbow which is pretty decent in the first three chambers. She'd be my last choice to be honest.

They're not much worse than the pilot. Two active items slots aren't that great for me because I don't use active items unless it's the elder blank, stuffed star, singularity, or the lead potion. I usually only run across ONE of these every other run, and most of the time I forget that I even have them in the first place because I generally don't need them. The lockpicks aren't that great because I always have keys for every chest on the floor, regardless if I have the discounts since I buy keys every floor, or I usually end up with either the shellington key, mimic tooth necklace, or the AKEY-47, so all in all the pilot just doesn't work with my own play style. I generally only used him for the elevator runs.

tl;dr They all have their ups and downs, but they're definitely not much worse than the pilot.

Well with the convict the whole "get hit to deal more damage" ruins flawlesses anyway, making it not the best option for me. Though I do like her ability to clear rooms early.

Pilot's lockpick I tend to spam on low tier stuff since I don't really use keys on those anyway, and if I get two good actives that I can swap inbetween, I'm all set.

Marine starts with 1 armor and probably best starting pistol which is alright, and an ammo drop that most often for me ends up getting replaced by a better active without being used.

Hunter has been claimed to be strongest due to the dog passive, since it increases your item drop rate by quite a lot. Not sure I agree with this but I'd say hunter is near the "top tier".

All in all what I meant to say was that the alternative options aren't A LOT better, pilot is not underpowered that is.
Frenetic Aug 7, 2016 @ 3:45am
the pilot is imo the strongest character of them all.
protip: use a lockpick on one of the 2 oubliette locks, giving him a 50% chance to get extra items on the oubliette for just a single key. for one key going down there is definetely worth it. even if you dont manage to flawless the first boss because of having to use the starter pistol with him.. he definetely has huge advantages. lockpicks on brown chests and locked shops and other locked doors are definetely worthwhile. saves so much money.
with proper use of the lockpick and his shop discount, makes it possible to get at least 1, maybe even 2 extra high tier items from the shops. beats any other character imo.
Capsandi Aug 7, 2016 @ 4:51am
i get a master round with the starting pistol on floor one about 40% of the time when i dont have a diffrent gun
QuantuuM Aug 7, 2016 @ 6:51am
Hunter, Marine & Convict wreck chambers 1-2, but if you don't get proper drops or shops, you start having trouble around chambers 3-4. Pilot on the other hand, is weak during the first chambers, but has bigger potential to be so much more powerful for the last chambers.
