oh and yeah pilot's gun is trash, past is totally worth it though.
I know it's worth it, which is why it's so frustrating to get his past done and over with Q_Q.
All I did with the hunter's past is stay as far away as possible and spam the sticky crossbow. It helps get rid of some bullets coming your way too.
Yup, usually you're going up against 1st chamber bosses with the Rogue Special, but I'll gladly pay that price for the perks you get with him. Shop prices being lower is great, I love saving casings. Lockpicks aren't so Trusty at all, but at least you get a chance to open those chests you'd otherwise just have to leave/break, if you don't get lucky with keys. I hate nothing more than missing out on things in chambers, in this game.
But the best thing is the extra active item slot. With EVERY other character, you are often forced to choose between an invincibility item, a damage boost item, a steal item; whatever it is, you can only carry one and leave the other. And as already stated, I hate missing out on things, but I also hate having limited options instead of more options. Getting a Backpack or a Utility Belt with another character doesn't happen very often either. Also, if you get lucky during a run, you can become a walking, dodge-rolling, gunning god with two active items, for example the Potion of Lead Skin and Stuffed Star.
One more thing. Trick with the Rogue Special is when you move and aim, you gotta be actively and very carefully moving the cursor to combat the spread of the gun. Once you get it, you start aiming better with it. Never 100% accurate tho.
The starting gun is crappy yes, but the alternative options aren't really much better. Pilot one of my favorites for sure.
They're not much worse than the pilot. Two active items slots aren't that great for me because I don't use active items unless it's the elder blank, stuffed star, singularity, or the lead potion. I usually only run across ONE of these every other run, and most of the time I forget that I even have them in the first place because I generally don't need them. The lockpicks aren't that great because I always have keys for every chest on the floor, regardless if I have the discounts since I buy keys every floor, or I usually end up with either the shellington key, mimic tooth necklace, or the AKEY-47, so all in all the pilot just doesn't work with my own play style. I generally only used him for the elevator runs.
tl;dr They all have their ups and downs, but they're definitely not much worse than the pilot.
Well with the convict the whole "get hit to deal more damage" ruins flawlesses anyway, making it not the best option for me. Though I do like her ability to clear rooms early.
Pilot's lockpick I tend to spam on low tier stuff since I don't really use keys on those anyway, and if I get two good actives that I can swap inbetween, I'm all set.
Marine starts with 1 armor and probably best starting pistol which is alright, and an ammo drop that most often for me ends up getting replaced by a better active without being used.
Hunter has been claimed to be strongest due to the dog passive, since it increases your item drop rate by quite a lot. Not sure I agree with this but I'd say hunter is near the "top tier".
All in all what I meant to say was that the alternative options aren't A LOT better, pilot is not underpowered that is.
protip: use a lockpick on one of the 2 oubliette locks, giving him a 50% chance to get extra items on the oubliette for just a single key. for one key going down there is definetely worth it. even if you dont manage to flawless the first boss because of having to use the starter pistol with him.. he definetely has huge advantages. lockpicks on brown chests and locked shops and other locked doors are definetely worthwhile. saves so much money.
with proper use of the lockpick and his shop discount, makes it possible to get at least 1, maybe even 2 extra high tier items from the shops. beats any other character imo.
