Found two of the same guns on one floor
Of my near 700 hours of playing, this is the first time this has happened to me.

I had that gun that shows what is inside a chest before opening it. I saw that this chest contained the Carbine (I think that is the name), so I didn't open it.

When I beat the boss of the chamber, however, for my reward I got the Carbine. So I thought, "Hmm... I wonder what is in that chest now." Much to my surprise, the Carbine was still inside. I thought when I opened it, it would change, but it didn't.

Nothing happened when I picked both of them up, though. Kinda cool, I thought.

normally agme tries to not generate extra copy of a gun or item that you already have. But such cases where you can get the gun from two independent sources are harder to prevent. In this case, boss' reward pool still contained all guns you didn't get this run yet - including Carbine.

I had my first repeated gun just yesterday. Used shortcut to second floor and picked Snowballer from Rat, then found another one in the shop. Apparently game first generates floor items, then adds Rat with his free gun selection (which is the same until you beat the boss after taking shortcut, so apparently it is generated when you beat the boss - so no adapting to what floor already has)

Yes, interesting to see how the game "works."

I wonder if the chest still would have contained the Carbine had I not already seen what was inside. I imagine not.

When showing what was inside the chest, the game must have checked the guns from the "available guns pool" and chosen one. After this gun was determined it cannot be changed.

Then, after beating the boss, the game again checks to see what guns I have so it can choose one that I still don't have, but it doesn't run a check on what guns/items chests are offering, making an 'overlap' possible.

Normally, the contents of a chest must be determined upon being opened.

from what I know, content of each chest is pre-denermined when it is generated . When you see whats inside, its exactly that - seeing whats inside. Would you blind open the chest you would get second carbine (and thus gain nothing)

This makes me curious - what would happen if you used duct tape in this case? Would it give you the obvious double-barrelled carbine with twice the ammo pool or produce something more complicated than that?

from what I've read, you can't get two copies of sam e gun. Second copy simply vanishes upon pickup. I think gam e simply tracks "if" you have a specific gun, not "what" guns you have. So that if you drop first carbine and pick up second you might end with sam e amount of ammo... again, I didn't risk to check

not sure, but you might use Carbine as duct tape ingredien which will transform it into "enchantm ent" for other gun, then picking up second Carbine will work. But I don't know at all if that works

P.S. why "m"+"e" letters combination is censored

Does the game do that though? Try to prevent? I recently had a run with Paradox where I started with the (carrot) Blasphemy. Then a boss rewarded me with Blasphemy. Sure the skins might be different but they're both called Blasphemy and they have the same stats .. they are the very same gun. Yet I was able to pick the other Blasphemy up, and I in fact had both Blasphemies in my inventory.

I've had dupe guns before as a reward from Rainbow chest or glitch chest but in those runs the other picked up gun would just disappear. Yet here with Blasphemy I was able to retain both ...

Had a similar thing happen to me just now. I also had "the Exotic" and I got that out of a chest on the first floor and it revealed that the other chest contained "the evolver", so I got two guns on this floor, not a single Item

One necro,
Two, the reason why people can be getting dupe guns is because while the game tries not to give the player multiple guns of the same class however that only applies to when they are in your inventory, note that the screenshot OP shows both carbines on the floor likely out of surprise if they opened it before dropping the other. This is how people manipulate the loot drops from chests hell even the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ class exists for guns which some characters automatically have one as their starter which automatically applies an increased 90% chance of finding another gun from the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ class before the other classes. (and just for clarification because I know people will be confused, I'm referring to rarity of the guns not how common they are, otherwise people would have been getting a bunch of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ guns before anything else)
Dropping your guns before opening a chest will sway the chances of a gun from the classes those guns you drop to drop from the chest so let's say you have three shotguns in your inventory and you want another shotgun, just drop all your shotguns then open the chest and you'll likely get another shotgun because you manipulated the pool and the game has a bunch of shotguns before other weapons entirely.
