is it meant to lose progress when i die?

I just bought the game and played for a few minutes but i want to ask about when my character dies is it meant to replay from chapter 1? and the loot to be lost? or is there some way to save the progress

That's how this kind of game works. There is no saving feature like you're looking for. As you progress through the game though you unlock more powerful weapons and items that you can find in chests and shops.

Your Hegemoney Credits (green h's that drop from bosses) are saved, NPC's you unlock are saved, all enemies, items, guns, bosses are saved entries in the Ammonomicon, you can unlock shortcuts to start at specific chambers, you can buy guns and items to add to the RNG pool, and most importantly, you get better at the game as you play more. There's a lot of RNG, but when you learn the in's and out's of the game, you can get the the fifth chamber every single time.
