No paradox puddle?

I've been doing a fair number of runs, going through all the floors including bullet hell and secret floors, but I can't find the little space puddle you activate to unlock the paradox character. I've done a run where I've done every floor except the RNG department, including full clearing bullet hell (which I promptly died on the boss fight), but I didn't find it.

I have more than enough hedgimony credits, and I don't know if there's any other criteria to unlocking the character other than finishing the run after activating the paradox puddle. Has anyone else run into this issue? Also, is it a sort of thing where it may or may not show up at all anywhere on a run?

Puddle has 20% chance of appearing. Also, it can only appear after killing any base character's past.
