MMMm...

I dont usually play but when i did it was in a local game.

You have to select your champ and then go whith the other champ next to the robot, at his right. Im not sure if you have the robot since the beginning but the one at the right side is the one you have to talk to start the multiplayer mode.

When you talk with him the game offers you to enter in multiplayer mode.

Local co-op can be played by selecting player one's desired character and then selecting the Cultist (the little robed gungeoneer sitting next to the hunter)
Online co-op can be achieved through Steam's Remote Play, start the game as normal, get to the character select, select your character, then press Shift+Tab and invite your friend to a Remote Play session, then select the cultist to enter into co-op. However, you need a good internet connection to avoid lag especially in a quick fire game like ETG. Remote Play works like a stream so it streams your screen to your friend and allows local co-op games like this and Cuphead, for example, to be played "online" when it's technically just a screen share that recognises your friends controller input as if it was in your computer
Hope this helps!
