Pilot: Having two active items can be very good and reduced shop prices are neat. The lockpick seems like a good item for newer players since they often don't have enough keys but for experienced players this doesn't have much use. The starting gun is pretty bad too. All in all not terrible but not great either. Very useful for elevator quests as you already said. I like his alternate outfit a lot too.
Marine: I used to always play as the marine because I think that he is the most skill-based character. Decent gun, better accuracy and faster reloading are also good attributes. But other than that he doesn't have much going for him. The armor piece and the ammo drop are single-use and therefore not helpful in the long run. His two skins are nice imo.
Convict: The damage boost is good but you generally don't want to take damage anyway so it's more of a fail-safe. The sawed-off can be bad if you're not used to close range attacking but other than that it's a good starting gun. The pistol she has is ok. The molotov is also a plus. I personally don't like to play as her though and I also don't like her skins. Probably my least-used character.
Huntress: The crossbow is a great starting weapon and her revolver is also good. The dog is useful for getting some extra drops and her alt skin is great. My go-to character atm.
Bullet: The sword is great as long as you don't take damage, no contact damage is amazing and the skins are dope too. But this character is too easy-mode so I usually don't use him.
Robot: The gun is good, the battery bullets and cooling liquid are also nice but HP is scarce. The damage bonus he gets from junk is also helpful though and he looks cool. But generally a pretty difficult character from my experience.
Pilot : Worst starting gun ever. Passive shop discount is great unless you do cursed run since you'll be swimming in cash anyway. The 2 active item slots are handy, it's one of the best thing about pilot. Lockpick is usually used only on wooden chest.
Marine : Decent character with less luck based combat (less shot spread). I didn't get the chance to use his ammo drop that much which is quite a waste sometimes. He's quite a basic character actually. I rarely use him though.
Convict : Never used her other than first try using her and killing her past. Her on hit buff passive isn't worth it for the long run.
Hunter : Crossbow for the win and has average starting gun. Her dog is sort of a mood booster when it found something. I managed to wipe the first 3 chamber with her crossbow alone, provided you got ammo for it.
Bullet : Chill, easy and fun gameplay with its sword. If you managed to not get hit at all, you can humiliate Dragun with it, haven't succeded on killing the Lich with it though.
Robot : Harder to play just because his lack of health bar. Starting gun is decent and the electricity bullet is darn spammable when you have the water gun. Love playing him with cursed run as I don't have to worry about getting hit by the jammed bullet that much.
Edit:typo fix
Pilot: Personal least favorite character, as his starting gun frustrates me to no end. The lockpick and discount were useful for very early on. With unlocks though, the Pilot just doesn't see playtime:
-Mimic Necklace
-Shellington Key
-Akey 47
-Pirate hat that increases key drops
-Working the shop for more keys
Marine: Second least favorite, though I don't have any bad things to say. He's average across the board.
Convict: My favorite character, though I'm not a fan of the alternate costume. The mad rate of fire on the starter pistol stacks very well with many passive items. The sawed off can be used for a 1-2 punch. The damage buff can be huge, if you don't mind trading off a master round for a quick finish of the boss. It can take a cycle off several of the bosses.
Take a hit > pop double vision / gun friendship > dump silly damage at something.
Hunter: Ms Doggo was my go to character for many many runs. Great starting weapons. Bonus items with the pup. Sweet alternate costume. Can't go wrong with Hunter.
Unlockable characters:
Bullet: All you need is Blasphemy, and to hope you get more passives. Screw guns, unless you find a run carrier like Gunther. The no contact damage is huge, especially on Challenge run attempts when things get very busy on screen.
Not a fan of Robot, even though the huge magazine size is fun, the RNG of health/armor drops kills the fun. Robot is hardmode in my book.
Convict: Terrible, I don't care for her starting items, weapons, or Active.
Marine: My Main Go to player. His starting weapon is great early and late. His training manual With faster reload speed and Better Accuracy for all weapons is a huge plus, Call down ammo and the starting Armor is great. All in all He's the best one out of all of them. <--- My opinion.
Hunter: Crossbow for early weapon gain is ok. Her starter is fast per tap shoot and works ok. The only thing I hate about her Starting Item is the Dog. Complete and total utter ♥♥♥♥ mutt. Never digs up anything for me, I've gone runs without him doing anything, and when he does dig up things it's HP I don't need. Worst. Starting. Item. EVER. <--- Again my opinion My luck with that dog is always low.
I'll get back to you when I Unlock the other characters.
With all the RNG magic that goes on in the game, the Marine gives you the ability to actually shoot straight, and imo his default pistol is the best out of the bunch. He let's you maximize your chances of clearing a room if your skill is high enough, which may not be true with the other characters.
+Doom is one of my favorite titles :p
convict: has suicide-passives, not interested, the shotgun and pistol only complicate things further because neither is very good all purpose.
marine: probably the only good character in the initially unlocked in my opinion, accuracy with all weapons improved as well as reload speed is a huge plus, you also should get a second gun on floor 1 100% of the time meaning you can at least usefully waste the ammo drop passive to replace with something else, or you can save it to the third floor and have a full reload of a boss killing weapon.
hunter: good in theory, but i really hate the crossbow, it just doesn't have the fire rate, the stopping power is nice at least early on, but it's just not enough, same with the dog.
