It should also be noted that some of the games on this list aren't available yet.
I don't mean to be a prick though; this is a very nice list, thanks. I'd also suggest Heart&Slash and Ohklos, they're a bit more out there but have alot in common with some of these
Good Robot and Steredenn for example are both a Rogue-like by this definition.
I don't know what to call true rogue-likes that play in time-based turn steps. It's a very specific playstyle that deserves its own term these days.
The Rogue-like genre of games is one of my favorites, and (imo) one of the most interesting to talk about.
Despite being a mostly niche group of games, Roguelikes are among the oldest of PC games, with origins in ancient text-based rpg games inspired heavily by D&D. Although they mostly faded into obscurity for many years, they have started to pop up again in a slightly modernized form, with more and more games from other genres adopting mechanics and ideas from RLs; some achieving great success. (Most noticeably: The Binding of Isaac, Don't Starve, and Minecraft.)
Because of the large differences between these "modern roguelikes" and the genre's original games, the term "Rogue-lite" or "Rogue-like-like" (or "Roguelike-Hybrid") was adopted.
Unfortunantly, (and hilariously) due to the fact that few people understand what makes a game a roguelike, let alone a roguelikelike, the term is mostly ignored. (it's easily noticeable on steam, where dozens of games that should be catagorized as being both roguelikes and roguelites simply recieve the roguelike label for the sake of simplicity.)
Put in simplest terms, Rogue-LIKEs are games with two prominent features: randomly generated maps, and permanent death. They also usually have primarily Turn-based RPG gameplay, and a Top-down view.
Rogue-LITEs are games that feature the two previously mentioned elements; but without necessarily being RPGs. They borrow from Shooters, Platformers, Hack&Slashers, ect.
(Like Gungeon) Which is why the name "Roguelike-Hybrid" is the best Imo, as it is the most clear.
So yeah, most of the original roguelike games were the turn-based ones you are talking about, and both roguelikes and roguelites can have elements that effect future runs, although that is much more often found in modern roguelites.
I personally prefer just using the word Roguelike to refer to all of these as a whole. The only reason the term "Roguelite" exists; was to seperate these new games from the originals, but it only succeeded in confusing everything. Derp.
At this point, the last thing we need is more vague and obnoxious names for things. This has gotten out of control, lolz
But the "simultaneous time-based action" bit has no easy way to track/search (that I know of).
If I wanted to find true-roguelikes, I'd have to wade through the mass of roguelites and modern roguelikes, researching each one through discussions, reviews or youtube.. Just to find one that uses time-based actions.
Eh, I'm personally a fan of more tags to get an idea of what something is. Like Rogue Legacy's got that home base upgrade progression system, yeah?
There's no term for that, not that I know of atleast.
That makes sense.
I'm not really against more steam tags, I'm against Genres that are basically the same having a vast array of vague names. The biggest problem with game genres for me personally, is that they are either too small to be applicable to a variety of games, or so universally useable they become nearly useless
(*cough cough* "Action" games *cough cough*)
Steam tags more or less solve this problem, but they do still have a few individual issues. I don't think anyone uses the "Psychological Horror" tag for its intended purpose, Lol
Sort of. Roguelikes are a genre defined by Procedural Generation, Permanent death, Turn based gameplay, top-down view, and tile based graphics, that are almost entirely RPG's.
Roguelites are any games that have Procedural generation and Permanent death, but without meeting any of the other requirements.
Rogue-lites are a subgenre of what you could easily argue is also a subgenre. I'd pretend it makes sense, but it doesn't.

Is Enter the Gungeon a roguelike like Enter the Gungeon or is it more like a roguelikelike like Enter the Gungeon? I'm asking so because I like Enter the Gungeon but I'm not sure if Im gona like a roguelikelike.
Its more like a roguelikelike like Enter the Gungeon, but you would enjoy it regardless since its mechanics are somewhat similar to Enter the Gungeon.
Thx man! I think I'm GoNNer buy this one, you know, I enjoyed a lot Rogue Likacy, Faster than Like and other games alike (like Enter the Gungeon), so this is a must.
