I THINK (but again, I never tried it) that you can choose which version of the game you'd like to play. Try and see what that does!
I have to rectify, that option I was talking about only refers to the way the loot drops. With the default option being the new, more "generous" one. At this point I'm afraid there is no chance to play the older versions. At least as far as I know, maybe someone knows a way.
But if you wanted to play for replayability I'd say you're covered even if you play AG&D straight away. The new items will be mixed with the old ones in the unlocking progression, making it feel more seamless, and you'll have tons of room layouts to get accustomed with. It should grant you a lot of playtime either way, but ultimately it's up to you!
(consider I had circa 170 hours of playtime for the previous versions combined, so if the formula can click with you you can potentially get the same if not more playtime even when playing the latest version right off the bat)
