Should you free the npcs?
I'm wondering if anyone has give some thought to not freeing the various NPCs. If you unlock their stuff that enlrages the drop list and my quesiton would be is the game easier to beat with the vanilla drop list?

Many of the best drops need to be purchased or earned from npcs.
I'd guess you're better off with than without

Always save all of the NPCs. The only NPC not worth getting all of the items from is the goblin, who you can just not talk to in the breach.

the unlocks that the NPC's offer are both hight tier items and low tier. however, it doesn't hurt to have their items unlocked since you a) control what items you unlock since you have to buy them with H-Credits/ complete challenges and b) even the mediocre and low tier unlocks are still very valuable (when i say low tier i mean comparatively with other unlocks). The question is not whether you should free NPC's, but rather in what order you unlock their stuff. i find the itempool of the yellow alien to be exhausted of value the fastest and the green marine-frog-swamp-guy to have alot of strong unlocks to offer.

regardless of the order, ignoring the chance to free a NPC is always a big mistake.

You should definitely free them.
always free them. some of the NPCs you unlock later on give you buffs for a run in exchange for H-credits.
Unlocking stuff is a major Part of the game to see more content. Rescue everyone you can find and fulfill their wishes and quests as often as you can.
