Chests

I've been playing for a good while now and still have zero understanding of what a chest is supposed to contain based on color or shape. Can anyone help me?

Generally black chests are best but every chest pool has some good and bad things in it.

Oh, I already checked the wiki but it seemed too complicated to understand so I came here someone would give me a boiled down version, but upon giving it a second look I realised it's not that hard to understand.

General chests:

Brown - D quality - garbage, but there can be some good items. Also can have some pickups, like hearts or keys.
Blue - C quality - a little better than D, but still meh.
Green - B quality - good items.
Red-yellow - A quality - very good items.

Bonus chests:

Synergy Chest (cyan with yellow) - can give you a random item or gun, that can give a synergy with some of your other items/gives you a random item.
Rainbow - gives you 8 items/guns, that can be B, A, and S rank - insta-win.
Glitch Chest (green chest with glitchy effects) - teleports you to secret floor that have only boss room with two Beholders. If you defeat them, you will get 7 random items/guns and a lot of pickups.

Aye, getting a gun and key/50 casings from brown chest is dang nice.
Or they can completely whiff and payout half a heart, taken that might be limited to extra chests.

Every floor has two garanteed chests. One contains a weapon and one a passive or active item.

I’d argue that A rank is actually equal to B rank in quality.

Not to mention D-rank chests have some of the best passives actives in the game.

The passive pool has like 43 items. And the good ones are inhales
Meat bun, bomb, frost bomb, weird egg, ammo Synthesizer, backpack, scope, ammo belt, decoy, bullet time, trusty lockpick (just use it on low tier chests or if you have no key’s for a chest), drill, potion of lead skin, double vision, potion of gun friendship, grappling hook, portable table device, battery bullets, lichy trigger finger, spring heel boots, Cigarettes, holey grail, blast helmet, lodestone ammolet, table tech sight, money, and rage, battle standard, and dog.

That’s most of the entire item pool that ranges from Alright (trusty lock pick, ammo synthesizer, backpack.) to broken as ♥♥♥♥ and run changing (holey grail and weird egg.)

Because fun fact weird egg is a full heal you could have 10 empty hearts and it would still refill your health.

And even then I’d argue quite a few guns are decent.

what, really? i have around 140 hours in the game with nearly everything unlocked, and have never gotten an in the wild rainbow chest or glitch chest lol

Took me 75 for my first rainbow and 200 for my first glitch, very low odds

I'm almost 50 hours in and I found a glitch chest. Got my s*** f***ing ******* so hard I **********!
Still waiting on a rainbow chest on a regular run, though. I want that kind of joy in my life.
