You really don’t need those ammo crates. I’ve had plenty of runs where not a single ammo crate dropped and I still didn’t use my starter past Oubliette.
It sounds like you need to get a better feel for how different guns are useful. Which are best for room entry, general room clearing, boss killing, etc., and how each gun can be used to maximum efficiency (like at what range they are most effective, don’t constantly reload a gun with a special shot at the end of the magazine, etc.). Try to use weaker guns on earlier floors and save the stronger stuff for later floors.
Buy keys from shops to open chests. Use your leftover Blanks at the end of the floor to try to find a secret room. If you see a really good item or gun in a shop, buy it.
I usually go lvl1: weapon lvl2: synergy lvl3: powerup and it's random from there
