Tip: open a brown chest when you get a gun from the rarer one
here's what items you can get from brown chests ONLY

Meatbun
Bomb
Ice Bomb
C4
Molotov
Supply Drop <-meh
Ammo Synthesizer
Backpack
Scope
Ammo Belt
Bullet Time
Decoy
Trusty Lockpicks
Potion of Lead Skin
Double Vision
Poison Vial
Potion of Gun Friendship
Knife Shield
Grappling Hook
Battery Bullets <-comes handy near ice enemies, otherwise useless
Lichy Trigger Finger
Enraging Photo
Ring of Mimic Friendship
Amulet of the Pit Lord
Heavy Boots
Cigarettes <-mostly only good when you're playing as pilot
Cog of Battle
Map
Sense of Direction <-eh
Blast Helmet <-not that useful
Lodestone Ammolet
Table Tech Sight
Table Tech Money
Table Tech Rage
Ruby Bracelet <- the worst right after health, ammo and money
Gas Mask
Dog
Health, ammo, money (worst)

If you get two brown chests, that just sucks

original title and post:
Why does no one open brown chests?

you can get pretty good items, like lead skin potion or lichy trigger finger. but brown guns are really not worth it

You have one key and have to decide: Green chest or brown chest? That's self explanatory

Sure, you could always get Cog of Battle, Sling or Potion of Lead Skin from a brown chest, but the overall chance of getting a good gun/item is much lower compared to the other chest ranks. Therefore, they're not really worth a key most of the time.

of course it's good to open the rarer one first but i've seen quite a lot of people absolutely reject brown chests and telling others to do it too in tips and tricks threads

Unless I have a ton of spare keys (like that one time I got the key stone thingy) I ain't opening any brown chests.

I open 'em if I have keys to spare.
I'm not scared of brown chests.

However, if I already got a passive/active item from the other chest and I know there's going to be a gun in the brown chest, then I'll usually pass.

yeah that's how i do it too

I've gotten significantly more heart drops (total waste of a key), guns like wind up or mailbox, and other next-to-useless passives than I've gotten decent items from brown chests. I try to save keys for chests on later floors if I can. Like other's said, if I have an abundance of keys I'll sometimes go for it, but only then.

There might be higher tier chests, locked rooms or even Lock trader. Brown chests throw in interesting idea of 'growing' what you allready have but its a long shot.

I wait until I've explored the entire dungeon first, then I either open or destroy the brown chest depending on the amount of keys I have.

If I'm holding Book of Chest Anatomy, I destroy brown chests, no questions asked.

Generally speaking, brown chests only have one good gun drop(Normal shotgun), but a great many good passive/active drops. the problem is you can't tell what chest is what, and taking a gamble on the brown chest isn't as safe as opening the other.
