It allows you to make a temporary save when you continue to the next floor, that allows you to quit and continue where you left off later.

No. If you talk to the button, it will give you the option to save your game. If you select yes, the eleveator will cause you to quit to the main menu. From the main menu, even after closing the game, you can choose to continue your run, or start back at the Breach - both of which will remove the option to use that savepoint in the future.
