From the main shop, you can steal as many times as you like, but each time you steal you gain one curse and drastically reduce your success chance. This chance remaine between floors. Upon failure, you take the item, and the shop will be closed for the rest of the run. The only exception is the grappling hook including the one from the d-pad, which will always result in a failure (you still get the item).

From any other shop, including the blacksmith in the forge, or other shops within the main shop, stealing will always result in failure, causing you to gain one curse, keep the item, and the shop to close. However, this is not remembered, even within the same floor if you find two of the same merchant (which can happen with a demon head).

is this a recent change? I was sure you could steal as much as you wanted from other shops as well provided the method works.

with that said, grappling hooks dont always result in failure. if you grapple the item you wanted while in the hallway outside of the room, you dont get caught.

I stole 2 items in a row from the forge, but I got "caught" on the second one, I got to keep the item but she didn't let me buy anything else.

I've also managed to steal multiple items from the regular shop but I never was able to steal more than 3 items in any single given run.

I have just double checked, the first time you steal from a merchant is a guaranteed success, but any time past that has a very low success rate, making it effectively twice that you can steal from them. I apologise for my mistake.

As for the grappling hook, yes, that is possible, but it is also unintentional. Thus, many of us choose not to do or discuss it.

on whos authority do you call that unintentional? have the devs confirmed this? I find it difficult to beleive the devs intentionally created a stealing item that gurantees you get caught everytime. especially when that is the only thing the item is worth using for. Im not calling you wrong, I just need a source on this one

Well, the grappling hook has one other major use, which is getting to the otherside of trap rooms quicky.

It also stuns enemies, and has a timer cooldown instead of a damage based one, which are both greatly useful.

yet you would still instantly drop it for just about every other active in the game....(if you didnt plan on using it to steal obviously)

TBH I'm good enough at dodging that I'd take it over the Relodestone - the recharge on that thing is too large anyway. The few items I would swap it for are Singularity, Big Boy, and possibly Lament Configirum or Elder Blank, depending on curse and floor or if I have the Full Metal Jacket, respectively.

A perfect accuracy, stunning shot, that lets you cross rooms with invulnerability, every few seconds, is so useful that I'd keep it through bullet hell and into the Lich.
