At least that works for me.
Another tip is to pay attention to which enemies have more or less health. The veteran bulletkin (the ones with an eyepatch) and the poopulon enemies both have very low health but dangerous attacks. Shroomers and Shotgun kin have twice as much health as a normal bullet kin so they're the ones you want to knock into pits, hit with transformation effects, or just keep your distance from.
That said yeah, don't be afraid to use that gun if it's better than your starter. You will likely find some ammo in that level and you don't need to save it for the easy arse boss. The trash is harder than chamber 2 trash anyway with the exception of iron maidens and the like.
Also, I would focus on killing those blobs first... not the ones that chase you, the ones that stand still and fire orbiting bullets.
edit: Also the blobs that stand still are the poopulons, which are one of the enemies I pointed out for attacking first.
If you use that method, you should at least have 3 keys floor 1. Then I would pick either Marine, who has the best starting gun of the 4 characters, or Convict, who has an active and second gun great for room clearing.
