Heart Purse Glitch!!!
So I killed the level two boss the Beholder without taking any damage, giving me six total hearts. I then went to the merchant and bought a heart purse. After the purchase, I lost a heart! WTF?

Perhaps you had the Ring of Miserly Protection. It gives you two hearts, but when you buy something from the shop, it shatters, and you lose those two hearts.
