PSA: If your right analog stick isn't working, it's because of Steam Controller support
Recently, Steam added controller support for controllers other than the Steam controller. This means you can use a PS4 and/or an Xbox controller to interact with Steam Big Screen mode or just for Desktop support.

BUT, if you configured Steam to work with your Xbox/PS4 controller, the game will stop responding to the right analog stick, and the RS button.

To fix: Go into Steam big screen mode, settings, go to controller settings. Uncheck any third party controller support.

This should make your controller work in game again.

You're doing the Lord's work son.
Thanks a bunch, this fixed my problems as well.

Holy cow, you are a lifesaver. This was driving me crazy recently with Enter the Gungeon, and I couldn't tell what changed. I am saved! Thank you Nomnaut.

Man... you saved me from throw away my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Joystick. Thank you very much, sir!

I didn't have a 3rd party controller option. there was a generic gamepad checkbox so I unchecked it and restarted steam.

steam per-game input settings are set to forced off.
Pinnacle is set to block game access to the controller driver
right joystick is mapped to mouse
gamepad is off in game options

RS doesn't work in Left 4 Dead 2 unless I enable gamepad. the key mappings are horrible without Pinnacle though.

Do any of my settings look wrong?

Two years and this post is still helping people. The devs should just pin it already.

I haven't had any issue using my PS4 controller, but if I do I'll know how to fix it. Thanks :)

I fixed my issue,. The solution was .. wait for it .. to set the controller to "force off" in steam and then enable gamepad in the options->keyboard & mouse. The controller works just like it does on my Xbox. I feel bad since I spent hours tried to use Steam controller profile and key mapping apps like Pinnacle game profiler to do it.

It happen to game that not in steam library too.
And I can't fix it even I unchecked on every box.

I don't understand why steam do it this way without prompting

Having an issue where right stick doesn't work... but exclusively during remote play. Tried this but it didn't work :(

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I'm in the same boat as Adre. My wireless 360 controller works perfectly when connected to my PC but not my Steam Link. I have also tried all of the steps described unsuccessfully.
This fixed two things for me. thank you for directing me there.

Hi, I'm having a similar problem, only the full joystick stops responding to me. Does anyone know what it could be? Thanks!
