Why does it have no effect though? I thought it was a bug, and would be fixed with Supply Drop update but clearly that's not the case .. makes no sense?

its just a thing with no effect. that all beast mode is.

Essentially, it's joking/mocking other games that have added difficulty titles like: "Easy, Normal, Hard, Hell, [Blank] Must Die!" and so on. It's them poking fun at the trope.
