Does Shay Patrick Cormak has schizophrenia?
When i play as him, i always hear whispering with some barely recognizable words/names in it. It's always there when assassin is hidden nearby, like his mental illness kicking in when he feels the dangers, so his illness is something that both tortures him but at the same time saves his life.

Maybe it's because of psychosis he couldn't just calm down before talking to Ahilles and couldn't just express his point clearly despite he was sailing back home for multiple days after the quake so he had time to calm down from initial shock.

I wouldn't call it Schizophrenia (which is a rather serious disease that I happen to know too well because had an uncle with it and its no joking matter to all over the sudden when you found out that he missed his remedies you're being looked at as a total stranger by that other personality/personalities of his)[en.wikipedia.org], but I'd prefer to rather call those to be highly keen developed survival instincts that may ease you helping ot find any near hidden Assassin.
And just as friendly advice for the future, please don't be to quick to attribute someone a tag that may not be adjusted at all to that person or particular situation in which those people are. :baa:

And I've never heard Shay muttering nothing but rather hear a distinctive noise when they're nearby that simply makes me triger the Eagle Vision just to spot where they're at and from which angle they're easily approchable without repercussion to my character. :winter2019happybulb:

There is different types of schizophrenia, and each of them may be of different severity. The thing that unites them all is psychosis, and in many cases it's auditory hallucinations like recognizing words and names in different noises, like example as hearing the voices in the sounds of pouring water or hearing whispers when trying to get asleep.

Also i wasn't very quick in giving attribute, i played this game for like 100+ hours, got tired of constantly hearing whishpering and found this a being a believable headcannon.
