Does the AC Franchise change at all after Rogue?
Hello,

After a long hiatus of the AC franchise after I finished Black Flag (which was fantastic), I decided to get back into it as I recently purchased Origins. However, after I started playing Rogue, I'm struggling even after the first 30 minutes, as I feel like I've been playing the same game since AC 2. Same thing, different characters, nothing new, nothing innovative, same clumsy AI, clumsy controls. I mean, the ship aspect was a super cool addition in BF, but Rogue is just boring me right out of the gate.

If I knew it changes for the better after Rogue, ultimately stepping into Unity next, I could get a little energized to play through the story. I was hoping someone could pep me up a bit, because I feel like I'm just running on a hamster wheel with every installment.

Thanks,

CipherLoco

Honestly, Unity is one of the best games in the series. Sure, it's got a lot of the same aspects, but gameplay wise it is a massive leap forward. It has the best parkour in the series and a new, challenging combat system along with actual stealth mechanics. Syndicate is similar in some ways to Unity and different in others (namely combat). Origins and Odyssey (as well as the upcoming Valhalla) are full blown RPG's with very little in common with the rest of the games except for the name.

You don't know how much it means to have you tell me this. One of my main problems with the franchise has been its long standing combat system, and stale parkour. I look forward to moving forward after you telling me this, so thank you!

Does the AI of enemies and allies, and their clumsy movement get any better? I mean, it's been long standing that they act weird, standing around like dummies, making strange movements. I was getting tired of the really basic stealth aspect, so what you said makes me feel good.

Thanks again!

I haven't played Origins or Odyssey yet, so I can't attest to how their AI is, but the AI in Unity and Syndicate definitely felt like a bit of an improvement. They aren't the most advanced stealth AI or anything, but they are definitely an improvement over the earlier games IMO.

You were right, Unity is definitely a breath of fresh air, exactly the direction I was hoping this franchise would take. Better parkour, better AI, way better stealth, better combat, etc. As soon as I started Unity, I was immediately invested.

You definitely gave me that pep in my gaming step to carry through Rogue, and it was worth it.

Thanks again!

The control scheme stays pretty much the same until Origins. Unity does add a parkour down button. Also the eavesdrop missions are not part of the later games.
Origins and Odyssey allow you to play the game in a much more open way.
Completed Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered recently on console and really enjoyed it. Still very buggy though.
Just starting Rogue on PC.

I am in the same boat as you. After playing the first games at launch pretty much I took a long break after AC3.. loved Black Flag and took a super long break after that.

I am playing Unity now, but.. wow.. I just realized I completely skipped over Rogue. Am I completely missing anything? I'm up to Sequence 10 in Unity so I'm not about to just stop playing it to play Rogue. Worth it to play that before moving on to Syndicate? I would really only be playing it for the story maybe I'll go watch a youtube video synopsis of Rogue instead.

Definitely play it before Syndicate. Some people may argue that the better order story wise is to play Rogue after Unity due to how they connect story wise (which I won't spoil).

Oh.. well that's a happy accident then. :)

There's something that, at least for me, gets worse after Rogue: enemies have levels, like you see in some RPGs.

Same unit, same AI, same visuals, but depending on the region, the HP and damage dealt changes a lot for whatever reason. And the way it's implemented kinda forces you to stop progressing through the main story to do side content in order to obtain better equipment.

I've been playing the main franchise games in order since the beginning of this year, and playing Odyssey right now. I'm really missing the straightforwardness of the Desmond era games.

I'm playing Origins right now (finished Unity and Syndicate decided to just skip Rogue) and I am really liking Origins. Egypt is a great setting and Bayek and Aya are good protagonists. I actually might go so far to say it's my favorite of the series so far and I've played all of them to nearly completionist levels except Rogue.

I will say it's been a LONG time since I played the original AC and the AC2/Brotherhood/Revelations "trifecta" since I played all those at release so my memory might be failing me a little for AC2 feels. The original will always hold a special place in my heart since it was so original and fresh and it's just been iteration and variation since then. I just think Origins is the best setting and complete package so far. I guess I'll have to perhaps reassess when I get to Odyssey.

Story, characters, lore and some gameplay mechanics so far are nice, even on the much criticized Unity. It's just this level and equipment grinding thing that becomes more and more annoying.

On Odyssey it gets even worse because of world leveling. Everything is at least your level minus 4, which basically adds an "expiry time" to all the stuff you get, no matter how advanced you are in the game.
