I haven't played many of the previous games but I heard someone mention they can bring soldiers back to life? And by doing the animus training do you become the person you're viewing or something.
I think you are talking about the bleeding effect. You don't become the person whose memories you're viewing but your memories start to mingle and you gain some of the abilities of your ancestor or something like that. It happens via overexposure to Animus.
