Edwards wasn't that British as he was a pirate who pretty much cared about money and his own the most, not about his nationality or the typical " posh " British way of life. So no, he is probably the least " British ". In fact, non of the AC characters in the series is very British...they all are either coming from a poor and tough background and are never really friends of the government, the royals or the rich.
The only rich Assasssins are actually Ezio and this Haytham guy, but that's pretty much it.
All the Assasssins are also rebels more or less. People who don't like to follow rules or fit in. And this is usually not the very British way nor is it understated or whatever you call it.
But let's get to the point. I do not know if I like MC yet. My favourite AC character of all time was and still is Ezio Auditore, he had all the character most others lack, he was charismatic and sympathetic. Yes, he was a little arrogant ,but I assume this comes with the kit if you are born in to a rich Italian family of the mid 1400s. And let's face it, after Altair, he is the real and only real Assasssin.
Anyway, when you have a chance to play more with Shay, let me know how he comes accross.
You could watch an introduction (first couple of minutes) of the ACR cutscenes, and maybe get a feel for how he is, if you wanted...

I think he's likable enough, but like I said, I thought he was just dumb for believing the Templars were good.
Edit: yeah, I don’t like him in the intro :(
This is Assassin's Creed, after all, and not Templar Dominance.
There is nothing such as a British accent. As Britain includes many different accents throughout the country. In example, the Scots, the Welsh, the English, then you get different regions i.e Essex, Oxford etc etc etc... they all sound completely different, there is nothing such as a uniform accent.
It's like saying, you have a U.S American accents. Someone from Texas sounds completely different than someone from let's say New York or California.
Yes, these characters are British or rather English actually. The reason they are over the top extraverts is most likely because they are successful harda**es who are partly criminals, such as Edward, who is a pirate.
I get your point though, don't understand why you are constantly referring to their " British " accent as you call it. Almost like being from Britain makes you a specific kind of character. There are fools, loudmouths and intellectuals everywhere. You can be as British as you want, if you are a jerk, then you are a jerk.
See my point.
I was hoping for an idealistic knightly Templar, who actually does work for creating a better society, even if the game considers such things OMG, evil. More like Ratonhnhaketon-Connor, but a Templar.
Anyway, I already have Unity, and I think I will just hop over Rogue to it. It has a really great initial Templar sequence and Arno seemed okay.
Oh, I doubt I will dislike an AC game per se, they are solid. I want an exciting run though, a repeat of AC1 and AC3 gamegasm.
But, his Irish accent is pleasant, and I like that his story exposes the hypocrisy of the assassins.
