Snake vs Big Boss?

So umm... who is who?

Apparently different games have different characters all named "Snake," can anyone help clear this up for me?

Basically Big Boss (Aka Naked Snake) is our protagonist in games such as "Snake Eater", "Peace Walker", "Ground Zeroes" and "Phantom Pain".
In other games the main character is Solid Snake - his clone.

Solid Snake (protagonist of Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 4) is a clone of the original man, Big Boss (protagonist of MGS3, Peace Walker, and Ground Zeroes/Phantom Pain). In MGS3 (which takes place in the 60's), Big Boss's code name was Naked Snake, so people still refer to him as just Snake.

So, two different people, but one is a clone of the other. Solid Snake (the clone) is younger (MGS1 takes place in 2005).

Solid Snake - real name David commonly referred to as Snake, known as Old Snake in MGS4. He was a product of the Les Enfants Terribles project and "son" of legendary soldier Big Boss, along with his "brothers" Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake.

The Legend of Zelda games too have different characters all named Link. XD.

Without getting into too many spoilers. Solid Snake (MGS, MGS2, MGS4) is one of the sons of Big Boss. Or rather one of the clones created using Big Boss's DNA in the Les Enfantes Terribles project. The other sons created from said DNA include Liquid and Solidus. In MGS3 'Naked Snake' later becomes 'Big Boss'.

So yeah MGS3, Peacewalker, MGSV GZ's, and MGSV Phantom Pain pertain to 'Big Boss'. While MGS, MGS2 and MGS4 pertain to Solid Snake.

Here's a chronological breakdown.

Protagonist is Naked Snake, or Big Boss, and antagonist is mostly Cipher:
-MGS 3: Snake Eater
-MGS: Peace Walker
-MGS V: Ground Zeroes
-MGS V: The Phantom Pain

Big Boss is antagonist, and protagonist is Solid Snake:
-Metal Gear
-MG 2: Solid Snake

Solid Snake is protagonist, and Big Boss is mostly absent from the story:
-Metal Gear Solid
-(MGS 2: Sons of Liberty goes here, but Raiden is the protagonist)
-MGS 4: Guns of the Patriots

And then Raiden and his best friend, a robot dog, have a spinoff where they fight cyborg-samurai.

Naked Snake is Big Boss. Solid Snake isn't. If you want to know which Snake you are playing as in any given Metal Gear game, you can safely refer to that list.
