It's an extra feature that seems like it'd be fun to use, It doesn't have to have functionality. Besides, You can use it as a separate screen instead of bringing up the IDROID all the time to see where landmarks are and junk.
I always use the app with the PS3 version of the game. Of course, you don't really need it after numerous playthrough, but it's always useful when you want to keep track of enemies.
I really hope Konami will bring the Companion App and PC version of GZ and PP together.
