METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES

METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES

Snake's voice
So this was a controversial thing back when the game was being made, but since I wasn't following it very closely at the time I figured I'd make a thread to discuss here people's feelings about the change of Snake's voice-actor.

While I think the change of VA made sense given that this is Big Boss now rather than Solid Snake, and Kiefer is pretty good don't get me wrong, I just feel like the way Kojima went about it was dickish. Basically in the interview explaining his decision he just came off as extremely arrogant and totally dismissive of the fact that David Hayter was Snake's VA in the English version for years and a lot of people loved him, he was Snake for a lot of people. I'm sure I'm not the only one who felt that way.

Maybe he wasn't really cut out for the job of voicing an older Big Boss in the way Kojima wanted, but the way he just blew Hayter off and basically insulted him by saying he wasn't really an actor and couldn't portray real emotions was just a poor way to transition between VAs. I guess after all this, even if somehow Snake did show up again in an MGS game, his VA will never be David Hayter again, as I can imagine there's nothing but bad blood between Hayter and Konami now.

I know it's not something you should take personally since this is between Hayter and Konami, as people have said, but as someone who thought Hayter was a really cool guy I just feel like the way that Kojima dismissed such an iconic VA was needlessly arrogant when they could have had a peaceful transition to a new VA.

Solid Snake will always be David Hatyter

I feel the same. And of course it's fine if older Big Boss has a different VA, but it's just sad to see such a cool guy and a beloved VA get snubbed like that. I guess we don't really know everything that went on there, if anything else happened they won't talk about, or if Kojima really did just decide he didn't need Hayter anymore with a budget big enough to hire a "real actor"
Personally I think it's Hideo trying to pull a fast one on us.

If this game goes full circle with the first Metal Gear, you might just get what you want.
Well to be fair David Hayter was having troubles doing Naked Snake voice in MGS Peace Walker. He cannot do that voice as easily as before. That's partly the reason why I guess. I still don't like the new voice because I liked the old one so much, but the job is well done.

I'd really like to believe that this is all just a stunt, but I don't really see the point of making a lot of fans angry just for the sake of being "sneaky."

And from the way Hayter reacted to people bugging him about being involved with the new games, seeming pretty insistent that he was "out", I just have a hard time believing he's going to be coming back.

We can always hope though.
I find Kiefer voice very distracting because he sounds nothing like snake imo. I would be far more forgiving if he actually hired a professional talented voice actor but Kiefer's voice acting is as flat as Hayter's ever was, if even more so.
Well, at first I thought the old voice didn't match the new style that MGS is taking, which is of something more realistic and dramatic, without those weird japanese things like enemy boss introductions, but after hearing kaz's voice (on phantom pain's) I kind of asked myself why did they changed snake if they were just gonna follow the same old style of voice with kaz.

I think that comes more from the fact that Hayter's been snake's voice since the beginning of 3D MGS. It was like when they changed dantes appearance on the lates DMC, id didn't strike right. Maybe if it was the first MGS we wouldn't have thought bad of it.
yep, i got no problem with the voice change. afterall, it is an older big boss, and they sound similar anyway.

but the way hayter tells it, it's like they just left him in the dark. hitman absolution had a similar situation, until they realized it'd cost them sales and they put the original voice actor back in.

honestly, it's idiotic whoever decided that it wasn't worth letting the guy know that they're changing voice actors long before the media gets wind of it. if it was kojima...well i think everyone is allowed to be a raging ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ moron once in their lives.

Like I said Hayter is not able to do Snake's voice like he used to be. He can still do it, but from what I've heard he lost his voice for a little while after MGS Peace Walker.

lmao...more realistic direction. meanwhile a girl in stripper outfit is flying round and teleporting. yep, totally a more realistic direction.
David Hayter shouldn't have voiced Big Boss in the first place, it makes perfect sense that he'd be voiced by someone differently as neither Liquid nor Solidus (who was said to be the perfect clone of Big Boss) sounded like him while Solid did. So unlike Sam Fisher and Garrett (two other stealth game protagonists who got their voices changed in the most recent games of their franchise) having their voice actors changed, this actually makes sense and said different actor actually does a good job.
I honestly hate the new voice actor, I'd pay extra as a DLC or something for Hayter to do even a shotty job at a redub.

Japanese snake has been the same snake for every game, why do we need to suffer.

Yeah, I dunno, I guess I just liked Hayter too much and never noticed, I always liked him in the games but that might be me being blinded by how much I like Hayter. And I don't think Kiefer is bad at all... just... that transition, not good. It left a bad taste in my mouth.

He's okay, the change is pretty jarring though. I mean he's supposed to be Big Boss's voice now... except that he's calling himself Snake again in the game, which makes it worse I think, if he just went by Big Boss it would be more tolerable so there was a clear division between the transition where he becomes Big Boss and not Snake, hence the voice change.

And I know a lot of people were never impressed by Hayter's voice acting, or at least not in the later games... but I mean really, I always just felt like being flat and gruff was Snake's character. Like to me it suits his personality more than sounding overly emotional. Some people just never express their emotions in their voice or in any obvious way. Snake is "just an old killer, not a hero" in his words, he's jaded and is supposed to sound raspy and blunt.

It could be worse though, the camera could have panned in and from Snake's mouth comes Christian Bale.... "WHERRR ARRRE THEY!?"

No it doesn't make sense. Solid Snake and Naked snake look alike. They are almost identical so it was logic that the same voice actor was doing both.
