It really depends though, just experiment with different values and use what you feel comfortable with.
I have a DS4 controller (that has better centering than the XBOX controller) with the DS4WINDOW program, and I use a program called "Durazno" to change the dead zone (using the the "anti-dead zone" to eliminate the dead zone, and using the "dead zone" option to eliminate any problem with the map, camera etc moving by itself because of the centering of the controller). You can use for both the analog sticks.
Using the Durazno program my game has perfect precision now.
The configuration that I use for my DUAL SHOCK 4 controller is:
Left stick: DEADZONE=6%, ANTI DEAD ZONE=50%
Right stick: DEADZONE=10%, ANTI DEADZONE=40%
It works good with the XBOX controller too, but the configuration may be different (because of the worse centering). Anyway, all you need to do is some tests.
