Also old Rohan didn't gain any powers from the convocation, the ritual is a hoax that didn't grant them any power. It roused the archfire of the entire planet and allowed it to fragment/destroy. At most he gained more power (arguably) just through experience and wisdom. Regardless, the series does have a problem with time, years/centures/events being rather oddly put.
First, if dark Rohen travelled back in time to the day of the convocation, then he sure has aged a lot in these few years. In the intro of Spellforce 1, which takes place just before the convocation, you can see he is already old, so he most likely travelled back in time a lot farther, at least long enough for him to age physiacally and become the far older looking old Rohen.
Second, in the intro he also has got an army of rune warriors that fights the army of the dark one. Even a circle mage can`t just travel back in time to the very day of the convocation AND then summon an entire army.
But there still is the problem with his much more aged look (in the intro, so the aging didn`t take place after the convocation) and the fact that (i think) everyone seems to know him as Rohen, the former circle mage, not as some guy who showed up after the convocation.
He also talked to the rune warrior as an "old friend", indicating that he was one of his warriors and he took part in the circle wars.
Edit:
Possible solution: Dark Rohen travelled back in time to a point well before the convocation( so he has time to age), but hides in order to prepare for this ritual(ages during that time). He then realizes it is impossibel to control that much power and tries to stop dark Rohen from being stupid. After the convocation he simply introduced himself as "Rohen Tahir, former circle mage, don`t worry, I`m a good guy now, here, have a portal, wanna join this awesome order I just founded?"
Since the real dark Rohen that took part in the circle wars wasn`t around to prove him wrong and old Rohen had old the memories dark Rohen has, nobody would doubt that dark Rohen is ashamed of what he did and now tries to make up for his past mistakes.
All those rune warriors from the intro that know him from the circle wars actually just remember dark Rohen. Your rune warrior never fought under old Rohen in the circle wars, but under dark Rohen.
Unless I missed something, that should answer my question.
