Last cod to ever get mod support?
Just curious as to why BO3 was seemingly the last and only title to have the mod tools released to the community (besides WaW). Like I feel like games like WWII or IW would have benefitted immensely from workshop implementation. I highly doubt mod tools will ever see the light of day on Battlenet but who knows since Overwatch has mods I believe. I did see one answer that the mod tools provided are still relatively "fresh" and have not reached their potential even after all this time which I guess makes sense seeing as you have assets from Cold War already implemented into some mods. Just curious if anyone has like the definitive answer as to why the mod tools are so sparsely put out.

I have no answer for your question but I always wondered that too. I think they choose not to include mod tools because of money. They spit out cod games frequently, so the game lifespan doesn't seem to be in their best interest.

Because mod tools means unlimited fun content - for free.

black ops 1 also had mod support

Which is funny, because Treyarch is greedier than IW from what we've seen in the past, especially with BO3. Infinity Ward did a much better job with CoD: IW and its monetization and how it handled DLC weapons. Had the SP? You'd get every new DLC weapon, its base variant on launch. Didn't own the pass? You could do a challenge to earn it for free, which usually could be completed in a handful of matches. Don't wanna spend your time and resources trying to get a DLC weapon via rng boxes? Craft it via the in-game crafting menu.
I can't remember if it was IW or Sledgehammer, but one of them also commented on BO4's $30 hammer melee reskin and said they wouldn't put something like that in their games ever. The studios, to some degree, do have freedom to decide how far they want to monetize their stuff.
I don't know who is in charge of deciding whether or not a game gets mod support, but if you look back you can see essentially none of the games had it. My best bet is that the studios don't care about modding since 95% of their customers are on console and the only reason this game has it is because some employee was adamant about including mod support in the PC version after seeing how much great maps w@w got over the years.
CoD could be a lot more popular if the pricing wasn't so bad and they'd include more neat features like mod support, but that's just not how they seem to operate. Even BO4 which was supposed to be a game "built-from-the-ground-up" and not a simple port.. well it was just a simple port, nothing more. Maybe Ravensoft did "build it" from the ground up with the console assets and Co, but you can clearly see its actual quality isn't better than a regular port.
Nothing was tested, seemingly, lots of things are unfinished, broken, don't work or are buggy as hell.

It's sad.

It did not. The mod tools were community-made and there were only ever like 2 or 3 maps released. Same with Bo2, it has community made tools that made it possible to have a bunch of custom game mods for zombies IIRC.

It doesn't. Feel free to show me a screenshot or something, but 1 never had official mod tools from what I know.

Apparently there's a beta for the mod tools on Steam, but there's also community made tools online. It doesn't explain why BO1 has essentially no custom maps, if there's official support.

Again, doesn't explain why there's community made tools and essentially no maps made.

Edit: You can't even download the mod tool anymore. https://www.ugx-mods.com/forum/general-discussion/21/bo1-mod-tools/14990/ so the game essentially has no real mod support. Again, community made tools are the only thing there is, hence there's only like 3 or so maps.

yeah, I've also read (not 100% sure) that BO1 mod tools didn't function properly until some community mappers decided to go for a voluntary effort to fix it. still, the variety of custom content is nowhere as much as WaW and BO3. so far, I've only played Perish and Battery in BO1, but I have to say Perish would probably enter top-10 most subscribed list on workshop, if it was released on BO3. I think it's an awesome map as if being created by professional devs, but sadly it remained unnoticed. its trailer is more interesting than some of the BO4 DLC trailers that didn't benefit from FMV technique (like Tag der Toten's slideshow trailer).

anyway, I believe we'll eventually see a new CoD with mod tools and custom content, but it will be released possibly by treyarch, as it looks like MP community doesn't care much about those things (except old titles like CoD4 where they're still very popular), and zombie modes by infinity ward and sledgehammer don't seem to be beloved by community at same level as treyarch zombies. I guess the next CoD by treyarch will arrive in autumn 2023, and it's a nice candidate for fresh mod tools allowing more advanced custom zombies.

That does look pretty nice yeah. It's a shame 1 and 2 never got real support. Especially 2 could've benefited from official tools. Hell even 4. I hate 4 with a passion, but after playing it for a while I've grown to prefer its movement and performance over 3. It's buttery-smooth and the only real issues are all the little graphical glitches and whatnot. The only thing that ever impacts my performance are a few select VFX that I can avoid for the most part. Meanwhile 3 is 50/50. Sometime it decides to work, other times it's stuttering nonstop.

Also believe me, the people who actually tried Infinity Ward zombies, Infinite Warfare in particular, love it a lot. IW zombies is a great mode with only a few things holding it back, things that should've been fixed in the beta phase of testing, but never were, somehow.
BO zombies is beloved because most people have grown up with it or joined the fray with BO3, hence most people argue 3 had the best zombie mode. Not saying that IW zombies is better, but it definitely had something special BO3 didn't have. From the lighthearted story (that ended in a cliffhanger), to the great variety in gameplay and music and the amazing EE rewards. You get a cool-ass camo and essentially a mod menu for doing the super EE on that game. On BO3 you get a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ RK5 and max ammo.. y'know the pistol you can find in most spawn rooms for $500 and you alreayd spawn with 500 points anyway..
