From a story standpoint, it depends on what series you want to play. The first games (COD 1, United Offensive, and 2) are part of a WW2 series that connect to each other. Then there's Modern Warfare series, which has a total of 3 parts. Then there's the Black Ops series (which actually has a WW2 prequel of a sort, World at War). Ghosts and Advanced Warfare are currently standalone games, but you can expect sequels to those games in the coming years.
Since you're asking on the Black Ops III forum, I'd suggest going back to at least Black Ops I and play through the story. Then work your way to Black Ops II. If you're interested in the Zombies mode in the Black Ops series, I will discuss further in a different post.
Start with BO2. That has been the best COD game on Steam so far.
Please don't recommend P2P games like MW2, MW3, Ghosts and AW. They are dreadful experiences. We want people to love COD. Not hate it because of the lag you get via P2P.
P2P = Peer2Peer.
Both Ghosts and AW employ a hybrid server system, where if there are no suitable dedicated servers, or if there is an abundance of players within close proximity, one player will receive data and become the "dedicated server", while playing at the same time (basically a more glorified form of P2P). But there are dedicated servers for these games. I can't say the same about MW2 and 3, because they were definitely P2P (MW3 does have rentable unranked servers, but they are, well, unranked, and the only way to level up is through P2P matchmaking).
