Game won't launch - "safe mode" box opens, then closes.

I've got roughly 100+ hours on the game on steam but haven't played in a few months.

Upon trying to launch the game yesterday, it was initially launching like normal, and then would crash after a minute or two. Now it's not launching at all, but opens the "safe mode" box, which disappears after about 2 seconds, and then closes itself. The only thing related to the game that I've updated recently would be the DLC pack I bought for Zetsubou no Shima.

Troubleshooting that I've done so far:

- Start game in both safe and normal mode (with/without admin)
- Verify all game caches/files several times.
- Uninstall and reinstall game.
- Updated all graphics and peripheral drivers.
- Create exceptions through antivirus/malware software (which is disabled anyway)
- Check for solutions in windows safe mode (game still wouldn't launch)
- Uninstall Steam, all game files, and related content, and then reinstall it.
- Developer mode
- Allocated more virtual memory.

PC SPECS:

Board - Z370 AORUS Gaming 5
CPU - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz
GPU - Geforce GTX 1060 6GB
RAM - 16GB DDR4 3600mHz

Again, I've played the game forever and I've never had issues, just not sure as to why it's doing this all of a sudden. Any and all help is appreciated, thank you so much!

the only thing that i think that would have changed for me would be the graphics driver. Are you on 466.47? Ive played cold war with no problems but no luck with this one.

i got the same problem with every call of duty (black ops 3, bo4 and cw currently and MW 2019) i just need to restart :D maybe it will help if you restart your pc (atleast for me) its working again

Last night i uninstalled steam and bo3. Reinstalled and launched and it worked. FINALLY. Today went to play and same issue again. So frustrating lol

Yeah, I'm on 466.47. I'm able to play every other game that I've tried, ranging from small indie games to other COD's. Everything works BUT BO3. Very frustrating haha.

I do - I have a dual monitor setup and I just plug one monitor to the motherboard another to the gpu.

Posting an update for those following the thread:

I decided to jokingly 'try and start up BO3 real quick' this afternoon and it managed to work just fine...like nothing had happened. I had reset my graphics settings through GeForce Experience whilst trying to solve the issue initially, so I had to change around some settings, but other than that everything was just the same as before. Has anyone else that was having this issue been able to launch/play the game?

I'm curious to understand the issue so feel free to add/msg me on discord at 'Torm #0952'.

I've already added the windows defender exclusion list, check the files, even reinstalled the Steam app, Updated all graphics and peripheral drivers.

the game simply DOESN'T OPEN!

Yes Geforce Experience "setting graphical options" broke some games, I needed to revert within the application.

recently found the same problem, every time It fixes itself whenever I restart my pc. nothing else, always works after that. not sure why.

A bit late but yeah, I tried everything, it depends on your situation but it is very rare for it to be a graphics driver (or whatever driver) or something like that. (It could be tho)

My fix was going through startup apps on windows and desactivating like just some audio drivers that I didn't need among other apps that I don't use. It's always stuff in the background that makes bo3 crashes instantly, it could be a third app that you using on steam like emulators for controllers and stuff like that. (For example DSX)

I hope this helps. It varies on what you have.

things i've tried: windows defender (onedrive is a cúnt btw), updating drivers, reinstalling visual studio 2021 or direct x, and checking task manager (which i found my answer for this fix)

edit: i have a fresh installed windows 11, this didn't happened to me till now, and of course it had new drivers that i didn't saw before lol
