Black Ops 3 Crashes at "Press Enter" Screen [SOLUTION FOUND]
SCROLL TO BOTTOM FOR SOLUTION (FINALLY)

I purchased black ops 3 on may 10th and it was working without any issues. I went away that weekend and came back on the monday and tried to play it but it crashed just after the treyarch intro movie screen. I can't get my head around this and im ready for giving up on it.

Full description of my problem:

- I launch black ops 3.
- It loads fine up until the "press enter" screen.
- Then my screen will go black.
- My screen display reappears but then everything is frozen.
- Forcing me to restart my PC.

It feels like a driver crash because I cannot do anything with my display until I restart but ive updated my drivers and even tried reverting back to older ones.

My game also meets the requirements for black ops 3 so no worries there.

Things I have tried:

Verifying integrity of game cache. All files validated successfully.

Anti Virus -

Believe it or not I do not use anti virus and windows defender is disabled. So I am not suffering from the AVG/AVAST exception problem.

Others -

Virtual Memory/Page File:

I have tried increasing my this but to no success relating to black ops 3.

Running under multiple different compatibility modes.

Running as administrator and without.

Launching in safe mode.

Windowed/Fullscreen/Windowed Fullscreen.

Launching without steam overlay.

Ive also tried using other peoples config files and this has helped temporarily. By this I mean it has allowed me to play for hours before but once I close the game and relaunch later it will revert back to my old issue. Then when I try use the config file again it will not work. Weird as hell.

My config file:

Solution:

I had given up and a friend decided top send me his "players" folder from his black ops 3 steam folder.

Take note! He sent me his ENTIRE folder. Not just the config.

From here I renamed my own players folder to playersOLD and dragged it out onto my desktop for safe keeping. I then dragged my friends players folder in to my black ops 3 folder to replace my own players folder.

My game now works perfectly.

For those who judged it runs like a charm so please leave my Radeon 7870 alone! ;)

NOTE: Ive tried to understand what exactly the difference was between my folder and his and the only difference ive noticed was that I had a mods folder in my players folder because I had downloaded workshop content previously before all of this started. My friend had not got any workshop content so he had no mods folder. It must be something inside of the config.ini that was messing with my game and somehow my friends config.inidoes not have what was messing with my game. I will look more into this tomorrow.

[THANK YOU]

Kenshiro-

Huge shoutout to the community member that took quite an amount of time out of his day to try help me with this.

ta_pcprod_assist-

We have had our ups and downs but there is no denying you did help and stuck around too. So thank you also.

Roll on Zombie Chronicles!

Couple things to try:

Make a backup of your config.ini file and delete the original. Start up the game and allow the game to generate a new file. Then see if the game starts up. If so then your modification to the config file could of caused it.

If that doesn't work, try a fresh install of the graphics driver again.

Perform a clean boot per instruction and only start up bare minimum programs, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135
NZXT CAM and MSI AFterburner are known software that may have conflict with BO3

New config did not work either got the exact same thing. Fresh graphics drivers did not work and I had tried that previously. And a clean boot also did not help me.

This is beyong bareable at this point ive restarted my PC over 50 times today trying to fix this. Really bad if im honest.

Try these additional things

Check for the following interference https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9828-SFLZ-9289

Make sure to run both BO3 and Steam as an admin.

Also what are your computer specifications?

I have tried running both with and without administrator.

My Specs -

CPU: AMD FX 6350
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB
RAM: 8GB
HDD: 2TB
OS: Windows 10
Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0

What ive just uninstalled because of possible compatibility issues:

Skype
Multiple VPN's
I have ended the processes for AMD External Event Utility

None of this worked ive just had to restart my PC again.

I am not sure why so many players edit the config file so much . Is there some performance gains to be had from editing the config that cannot be altered in game ?
Kronix May 18, 2017 @ 11:53am
I bought this game when I had a 660ti with 2gb . I could play on minimum so I got a 970 and that extra 2gig made all the difference . I bet it is maxing out your ram too .

Maybe try going down resolution and turn textures down to low. Turn off sync if you have it on.

I would try a desktop theme classic in Windows 10 to free up some resources .

I was running this game perfectly fine on 1920x1080 before all of this happened. Ive even tried with lower resolution like 720p and 1280p but no success. I have a strange feeling this is video driver related because I get several screen tears if my game manages to get as far as the orange screen with the soldier holding 2 guns. The screen flashes orange and is all torn. Although this is only for black ops 3 so im ruling out my video card. Although like you said it could be the RAM too.

On the very odd occasion my game actually lets me play I have been able to play for several hours with no interruptions. I also get a constant 60fps although I am running on low too. But 1080p makes up for that to me at least.
Kronix May 18, 2017 @ 12:03pm
Try aim for a steady 60 fps . Displaying fps display helps when troubleshooting . I use Nvidia cards so I am unfamiliar with and drivers .

Check your render resolution and turn off anti aliasing maybe that will improve your performance . Does the game give an option to run in safe mode when booting up ? If so run it in safe and then adjust your settings if it loads successfully .

Thanks for your help in this but I have tried safe mode before. It crashes at every resolution once I get to the "press enter" screen. In fact it's more of a system failure if it causes me to have to restart my system. It freezes my entire display not only the game. I don't think you understand though. I could get over 60fps if I wanted to but ive got it locked at 60. That's how I manage the constant 60. Id rather that than strain my system to over 100fps.

Kenshiro I may owe you an apology. I just set it to launch in safe mode again and it launched in windowed. It ran fine but obviously I wanted to change it into fullscreen and up my resolution. When I pressed F to change the settings it crashed and I had to restart my PC. So is it a fullscreen issue im having?

No apology required :)

If you want to change to full screen / windowed you can press alt+enter . I would expect the game to run better fullscreen rather than windowed but i may be wrong . Try the same method you did again but instead of changing to windowed in options try the shortcut mentioned above . Seems you are making progress.

Have you tried a fresh install of your graphics card driver again?
