3 has more stuff, 2 has the new modes and 1 is just the original and no Geoms to help out.
All games were awesome for it's time, though I think 2 had the best gameplay but can't argue with the fact that the 3rd brought a lot of content and experimentation which I really enjoy. When replaying the first one nowadays I realize it's getting a bit old even if it's great, I prefer the feel of the newer version. More crisp and I lprefer the new version of collecting geoms.
My order would be 2 > 3 > 1
3 is great, but one thing that I consider to be a HUGE sin in this one is how the board will wave up and down when a big explosion happens. Sometimes enemies will clip under it and you can't see them for a split second.
Also this is off topic a little but I would really like it if the leader boards were cleaned up from time to time. That's probably not going to happen but...yeah.
2 got most things right - I'd swap 3 for a PC port of 2 in a hearttbeat.
3 contains a lot of what made 2 great but also too much randomness - the 3D stuff varies from OK to outright 'does not work' - too many unfair deaths - too much power-up crubbins - too many modes and so on
1 was a bit basic if we're honest - there are 100s of arena shooters which bettered it.
The music and light show in 2 is amazing. GW3 music just isn't fast paced and high energy enough for me and I really miss the large explosions.
If there was a re-release (or HD re-release) of 2 on the PC, I would definatly buy it.
