BEWARE: Devs have planned a monthly subscription fee since early development
This game has been in development since 2014.

Since the early years the devs stated:

"We are considering either using the traditional subscription based model or a model where the player buys the game and then has the option of purchasing mini-expansions or ‘modules’ after launch. Either way, the game’s world will continue to expand, more content will be added, as well as new features and mechanics." -- They also asked if people would be willing to pay more than $14.99 a month, so this should be told NOW before people buy the game and do not know these fees may come into play later on which can render them unable to play without investing more and more money per month into the game.

Some history of how long this game has been in development:

On January 13, 2014, Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen was announced alongside a Kickstarter campaign. The funding goal was set at $800,000, but the campaign raised only $460,657 from 3,157 backers. That failed.

Immediately after the campaign ended, Visionary Realms launched their own website and began crowdfunding independently by selling pledge packages with various perks, such as early character name reservation, in-game cosmetic items, and access to testing phases.

So, Two months after their website launched, in April 2014, Brad McQuaid announced that progress on Pantheon had to be put on hold as the team had to leave to find other sources of income. Any donations during this time went "directly to maintaining the website... and not towards development."

From then on they had various investors and other campaigns to bring in money through companies and also influencers COHHCarnage

So its been in development for over 10 years now with many issues to get the game out or funded enough for a release. Hopefully the devs are upfront about fees that will be there at launch and not collect money and run or collect money and not say its a monthly fee and add that later on to the dismay of the unaware EA playerbase.

Last I heard they said they were still considering a monthly fee. I think there will for sure be on when the game officially launches. I wish they had figured it out now and stated what is was going to be.

Might be a few people upset later when they get a monthly fee on top of the $40 purchase price. It would have been better to be clear from the start. That way people know what they are getting for $40.

I think the way to look at it is you are paying $40 to play a game for as long as Early Access lasts. After that who knows what will happen. If it really is in Early Access for 2 years like they said lots of change in that long time frame.
A developer of this app has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

But you need to tell us before we buy this EA if we will have to pay a subscription fee later on or be locked out of the game if we do not once you decide.

If we buy now, help you test alpha which this is no matter what you are trying to do by releasing it under "Early Access" on here. Then we are actually kind of working for you as testers early in development. To then lock us out if we don't pay a monthly fee that is not mentioned now when we "BUY YOUR GAME" would be wrong and I am telling you now, could spell doom for the game.

Be wise and tell your customers what fees lie ahead and not "maybe or we are not sure yet" as that will not fly on Steam. I am sure you heard of concord and Dauntless just this week.. and hundreds of other games that are not totally upfront and/or change stuff or release stuff in a way that Steam users do not like. It never goes well.

Be honest, let us know what we have to pay to play the game in the future. Is there going to be a monthly fee, YES or NO? No maybe is acceptable at this point where you are having us buy in and pay for the game.

Why would they need to tell you that? It's not decided yet so all they CAN tell you is that it might or might not happen. Buy with that in mind. You're buying access from now till release plus the base game at release. If they add a sub fee at that point you can choose to stop playing if you want, but the 40 dollars is only meant to cover what they say it covers.

If you must be 100% certain at this point then you probably should wait till that information is decided on so you can make your decision at that point.

All info is given up front, there is nothing hiding. If that doesn't work for you don't pay the 40 bucks.

Gamers are so freaking cheap. Read what early access is. It is to help fund current development with no promise it will improve. You know what is greasy is people like you coming in here and not reading what ea is

The community handling on this game is already coming across so defensively. Yes, people want to know what they're buying into with their $40, a legitimate question, which should probably have an answer as you're taking people's money on Steam. The platform is quite established and has standard practices people have come to, well in a word, expect. The idea these questions would be surprising or invalid is quite off putting.

"originally, we contemplated on following a sub model, but are still evaluating our options and will be using the Early Access phase to open that dialogue with players" - So far the dialog includes nuggets like " If that doesn't work for you don't pay the 40 bucks."

I won't. Don't be salty when more people call this greasy practice out tho.

I have no problem with a monthly sub. It keeps up them up and running and creating new content. 5,10,15 dollars...I spend that much on average per month for games anyways.

I’m not salty or mad. I’m having fun with the alpha build. I just don’t understand the lack of ea comprehension around lol.
