This is better advice than it first appears. Until you reach 5th level all of your hunger and thirst meters are reset to 100% (so no need for food or drink) and there is no penalty for dying: no XP loss, no corpse to recover and instant teleport back to your bind point.
Or just have a summoner make food/water for the party, if your party has one.
They don't even need to trade it, they can just spam your inventory with stuff if they want to, which is kinda of funny.
That is a good point. If you make a point to gather while you are adventuring, crafting becomes extremely easy. That is, you may find that after a few trips of play, storing up what you collected, that you can easily craft anything you want and it levels up quickly without "grind".
