That said, mobs, including solo ones, can drop gear rarely. The skeletons in the area just outside town (the one to the side, not the one over the bridge that lead to the elites) you can kill easily even at the very beginning and they have a chance to drop some +1 stat gear of leather quality, or very rarely, a (not so good) shield.
Occasionally chests that spawn in specific areas randomly can contain a schematic for crafting, but the odd time they can hold a weapon in them too (no stats usually), which if you still have the starter weapon, could be an upgrade depending on your class. Found things from clubs and maces to daggers.
if you are a tank buy a set of basic t1 gear from an armorsmith to get you started it shouldnt cost more than like 30 silver for a set. anything else just group/kill stuff/buy things that people are selling. You get a lot of money after you get past level 10.
Ive leveled several characters up to at least 10 and more up to like 6 or so always doing the crafting thing in an effort to get started. Ive learned its just not worth it. Take a craft if you want to be a crafter and make/sell things to players otherwise skip it. Save your coins until they change stuff/add the missing tradeskills in, maybe take cooking its decent. Dont take alchemy unless you are a good solo class.
Then, combined with some crafting focus you can shore up that gear with the first tier which is fairly easy to reach.
At the same time, human mobs (and some animal named and the like) will eventually start dropping uncommonly gear with +1 stats on it. This you mix in with your crafted gear and if you have continued your crafting, eventually you will come across schematics which will allow you to craft +stat gear in that tier.
If you balance between the world mobs, and keep your crafting up, this will progress with better gear along the way between them and specific named boss, especially in dungeons will add to this.
That is what I would say is a good progression of play to keep yourself up in gear for your content level.
