The game won't be done for years. It is far from done and is currently missing a lot of basic QoL features. If the game will even be good once it releases for 1.0 remains to be seen and I am doubtful given what I'm seeing now that they are charging $40 for and their track record with development.
Older gamers want a new MMO that is more like how MMORPGs were before World of Warcraft changed everything and made MMOs more streamlined and casualized. The game does offer some of that - it's not like modern MMOs which just hold your hand the entire time and make for a very easy or automated experience where you're just spamming solo quests by yourself. This game does manage to be more group-focused where there's actually more of a need to get together with fellow players to form groups to tackle content. A lot of these players really want this game to succeed and so are willing to overlook the issues and focus more on the potential.
The difference was almost completely due to my performance. Going in prepared, optimizing my ability usage, that kind of thing.
In other mmos, this massive difference in your ability usage is typically reserved for instances, and sometimes high level instances. The general questing experience is incredibly simplistic and easy.
I believe at one point I unequipped all of my armor and only equipped one gray vendor item as a weapon, appropriate to my level, and I was still able to kill enemies equal to my own level in literally one second. Literally a single global cooldown and an equal level enemy died to a completely naked character.
For me, for the reason I play games, that is completely unacceptable. I need my difficulty in the open world, while leveling. This game provides exactly that. Frankly it goes a little above that and kind of takes a huge dump on you if you're not prepared...
Keep in mind that what you call issues are just early access. A lack of content is not an issue for an early access game, it's an item on the to-do list. Janky animations are on that list, interesting quest descriptions, balancing, etc.
The only "issue" I had to overlook so far is I couldn't figure out what the equivalent of General chat was.
Everything else is about right although keep in mind it isn't just about us old timers, another critical division is an RPG versus an action rpg. If you aren't maintaining at least 50 APM in World of Warcraft retail, you aren't getting through the instance. Here it's more about 20.
Yeah, you can't have depth without learning and unfortunately too many modern games take away that requirement in play because they don't want to scare the player away.
The result is... I hit this... it does that.. I win because.. it is this level, I have this gear.. I win.
Thing is, in this game if you don't pay attention you can have trivial mobs take you down quickly if you pull too many.
This is back to the concept of "Learn the game, learn the systems, learn the class" because while two of the same classes might be exactly the same, how successful they are will depend on how they are played.
People will have to learn, and in time they will excel.
