This game does have a downed state mechanic before death allowing to move yourself. Allies can heal you or revive you/summon your corpse and reduce the exp penalty for dying. I have found the death penalty not to significant although not past lvl 10.
At 5 you lose XP, and drop your entire inventory, you keep your gear you have actually equipped though. You can get a Necro or Summoner to summon corpse if it’s in a spot you can’t get to.
You have to run back to collect your corpse when you died to collect your stuff.
Necromancers and Summoners can summon your corpse to you rather than you have to run to it. Some classes can revive you to bring you to your corpse. Higher-tiered revives like from high level clerics can recover some of the 10% exp that was lost upon your death.
Odd, I've only ever lost 5%...
