So I can shine some light on why we don't allow this right now.
There's two sides of this problem we need to solve to hopefully allow free swinging one day:
1) Aiming in third person with the orbit cam gets tricky. I think the solution here is to basically do what aiming does, which snaps you into the direction you're facing nearly instantly. The issue is in orbit cam view your Y-axis doesn't register unless you're aiming because there's no real point in moving the character up/down based on view in the third person orbit cam. So I gotta put some thought into how that would work.
The second is we have some internal systems that activate specific things when aiming/not aiming a weapon. Those are a mess of edge cases I'd need to work through to allow free swinging.
I've added this to investigate to the long term enhancement list, which hopefully we can get to once more critical short-term launch feature/fixes are done in the next few weeks, plus once we're out of crunch after the upcoming PS5 release.

This has been fixed in v1.0.0.8 and now E is supported as an interact key.
The feature to enable and disable the crosshair is now available in v1.0.0.9. We're still working on a good way to resize it and have the game function well.
This option is now available in v1.0.0.9.

Both keybindings and a shader precompilation menu are being added in the next patch based on community feedback.

Just letting you know we just pushed a patch that has a full keyboard, mouse, and gamepad keybinding menu (on the main menu and ingame in the Escape menu), as well as support for unlocked framerates, and vsync for 120 and 240FPS. :)
