I find Xbox One controller is better for brake and acceleration controls, although I've found it almost all comes down to getting used to the car you're using and the different surface types.
Also if you're using no assist like I, but you're using automatic gearing, make sure to let off the gas going round corners when it shifts down a gear or your back end will kick out.
I use first person camera cause I feel it helps with knowing where your car is on the track.
Final thing is to keep going, even if you're behind on one of the split times, cause you might nail the next parts of the stage.
